James Fisher Sr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 21, 2025.
James Hammond Fisher Sr., affectionately known to many as Jimmy Fisher, born on November 7, 1939 in West Friendship, Maryland, was called home to rest on August 27, 2024. The second son of the late Charles Emory and Carrie Viola Fisher (Hammond), was preceded in death by the love of his life, Marsha Fisher (2022), his older sister Olive Viola Smith (2019), and older brother, who was failure to thrive as an infant.

Jimmy attended the school system in Howard County, Maryland as a young man and was a member of Future Farmers of America. He graduated from The Harriet Tubman School, Howard County's only all-black High School, in 1957. The school closed through desegregation in 1965 and is now preserved as a historic, educational, and cultural center.

During his young adult years, Jimmy spent time between Mariottsville, Sykesville, and Catonsville, Maryland. As well, he spent some of those years back and forth to New York state, specifically the town of Amenia, but ventured to nearby towns often. Much of his time was spent with the Parker family of Amenia, New York tending to the Parker family's Morgan show horses.

Jimmy married his first wife, Betsinda Dorsey, at a young age. Out of this union, two beautiful children were born. At the young age of 21, Jimmy's first child, Cindy, was born in 1961. In 1966, a baby boy, James H. Fisher Jr, affectionately known as Jim Jim was born. Betsinda resides in Amenia, New York today.

In 1968 Jimmy met Marsha Fisher (Todd), of Oswego, NY, while they were both residing in Amenia, NY. At the time, they both worked at Wassaic State School for Mental Defectives in Wassaic, New York. Marsha as an Occupational and Physical Therapy aid and Jimmy as a Nurse's aid.

Jimmy and Marsha moved to Marriottsville, Maryland to live with Jimmy's mother, affectionately known as 'Mama', and 'Miss Carrie' to start a new beginning. They were married in 1973 on the front lawn of their home surrounded by family and friends.

In 1984, Jimmy and Marsha were blessed with a child of their own, Carrie Anna, named after Jimmy's mother, and Marsha's grandmother.

In 1989, they bought their forever family home and settled in Catonsville, Maryland, close to Jimmy's older sister, Olive and her family.

In 2021 Jimmy and Marsha sold their home and moved back to Howard County, Maryland, residing at Heartlands Senior Living in Ellicott City. Both of them enjoyed nature, their pets, choir, and going out to dinner with family and friends.

Sadly, Jimmy lost Marsha suddenly to a heart attack in 2022. But being the man that he was, he did his best to stay positive and keep going each day knowing she was at peace.

Jimmy worked many jobs over his years that included, masonry work, hospital attendant, flower delivery, and farm-hand. Jimmy decided to dedicate the majority of his time to a career with the State of Maryland as a Special Police Officer from the 1970s-1990s. He proudly served 20 years at Perkins State Hospital in Jessup, Maryland, retiring in his early 50's. Jimmy's 2nd longest career, 14 years, was in Janitorial Duties and Maintenance at McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland from the years 1991-2005.

Jimmy had many hobbies and enjoyments throughout his lifetime that included baking, woodworking, trains, birds, Chevrolet trucks and cars, gardening, plants and flowers, the Maryland Lottery, coins, Nascar racing, and many more.

He was a devoted and grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous and had collectively over 40 years of sobriety. Most recently, he would have celebrated 19 years at the New Year in 2025.

Jimmy will be missed for his positive and friendly attitude, charm, and gratitude for life.

He leaves loving memories with his children, Cindy Murray (JR), Jim Fisher (Dina), Carrie Fisher (Matt); three grandchildren, Harmony Murray, Hanna Murray, and James Fisher; his first wife, Betsinda Fisher; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, their families, and his extended family and friends.
