James Madden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 22, 2025.
James "Jim" Edward Madden, 82, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Born on October 17, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, Jim was the beloved son of Robert Emmett Madden and Mary (Kehoe) Madden. He grew up in a Catholic household and attended Catholic school from kindergarten through college. His faith remained a guiding force throughout his life. He earned his bachelor's degree from Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana-a place that would remain close to his heart and later honor him with an honorary doctorate.

Jim dedicated more than three decades of his professional life to Rider Dickerson Inc., a family-owned printing business located in Chicago's historic Printer's Row. Alongside his brothers, Bob and Norman, he helped lead the company with integrity and vision. His commitment extended beyond the business itself-he cared deeply for his employees and coworkers, fostering a workplace built on respect and camaraderie.

A proud veteran, Jim served six years in the Army Reserves. His sense of duty and service extended into every facet of his life-from his work to his community involvement. He was an active supporter of numerous organizations that reflected his values and passions, including Saint Joseph's College, St. Coletta's of Illinois, the Chicago Irish Fellowship Club, the Printing Industry of Illinois Association, Commissioner in the Village of Palos Park and various roles at St. Martin de Porres Outreach Mission in Florida.

Jim was also a man who cherished life outside of work. He found great joy in golfing with friends across the globe, a pastime that brought him both relaxation and connection. His love for travel and companionship made each round memorable.

His devotion to family was unwavering. Jim shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with his wife Drina (Krajic) Madden. Together they raised two daughters: Erin (Madden) Miller and Heather Madden. He welcomed their husbands, Jake Miller and Santiago Delboy, into the family with open arms. Jim took immense pride in being a grandfather to Will Miller, Ben Miller, Mary Miller, Mia Slawikowski, Elena Slawikowski, and Jack Miller.

He is also remembered fondly by his sisters Mary (Madden) Carey and Susan (Madden) Darrow.

Jim's spiritual life was deeply rooted in service to others through faith communities such as St. Michael's Church and Our Lady of the Woods Church in Orland Park. His dedication to these parishes reflected a lifelong commitment to living out his beliefs through action.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Robert "Bob" Madden and Norman Madden; all of whom he worked closely with during their stewardship of Rider Dickerson Inc.

Jim leaves behind a legacy defined by faith, family, friendship, and service-a life well-lived that touched many across generations.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

A funeral mass will be held at St. John XXIII Church in Ft Myers, FL on October 10, 2025 at 10 AM, with a celebration of life held after the service. His internment will be scheduled in the summer of 2026 in Durand, Illinois. A separate celebration of Jim's life will be held in the Chicagoland area in the summer of 2026.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph's College of Indiana or St. Martin de Porres Outreach in Florida.

To the Madden family... My sincerest condolences to you all. I have very fond memories of Mr. Madden going to work very early in the morning, especially when Erin had many of sleepovers at her house. I also remember the Madden girls having great paper ( thanks to their dad) at their house to draw on and do art projects with. Mr Madden always seemed to be a happy go lucky guy. Even when I saw him recently, he had a great smile on his face and was always happy to see you. Rest in Peace Mr. Madden.
