James Medeiros Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2009.
FAIRHAVEN — James J. Medeiros, 91, of Fairhaven, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2009, at his daughter's residence following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Emma (Victorino) Medeiros.

Born in Fairhaven, the son of the late Manuel and Mary Medeiros, he had been a lifelong resident of Fairhaven.

Mr. Medeiros was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, class of 1937 where he played baseball and basketball. Following graduation, he played baseball and basketball for the Fairhaven Varsity Club.

Mr. Medeiros served in the United States Navy during World War II. He experienced intense assignments overseas and was the proud recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. He served on the transport ship USS Alhena which was torpedoed in 1942 by a Japanese submarine in the Solomon Islands. The torpedo created a 45 foot hole, causing extensive damage to the ship and ignited fires that the crew fought for three hours to bring under control.

He worked for Morse Cutting Tools for many years and retired as shop foreman.

He was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary's Church in Fairhaven, a very active member of the Knights of Columbus in Mattapoisett, a member of the Acushnet Seniors where he played cribbage, he bowled at the Mattapoisett Bowlmor Lanes and was involved in town politics. An avid sports fan, he especially loved the Patriots. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking and built his own home.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Ann Medeiros of Fairhaven; two brothers, Antone Medeiros of Fairhaven and John Medeiros of Dartmouth; two sisters, Isabel Jardin of CA and Margaret Devlin of Illinois; two grandsons, Glenn Silva of Fairhaven and Jayme Silva and his wife, Rebecca of New York; four great-grandchildren, Bethany, Nathaniel, Benjamin and Caroline Silva; a son-in-law, Robert Silva of Fall River; a good friend, Susan Hopp; and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Friday, February 27, 2009, at 10am from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven followed by a Funeral Mass at 11am in St. Mary's Church, Main St., Fairhaven. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8pm. Burial in River-Side Cemetery.

Flowers welcome or donations in his memory may be made to Southcoast Hospice, 200 Mill Rd., Fairhaven, MA 02719.

To Glenn, Jayme & Shirley,
I would like to offer all of you my deepest sympathy in the passing of your dad/grandfather. He was a beautiful, pleasant man who I was fortunate enough to have in my life at one time. I have fond memories of both him and his wife. I hope & pray that you all find comfort in your memories that you have. Remember all the good times that you shared with him. I'm sure he's up above looking down smiling on all of you. May he rest in peace. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
