WESTWOOD — The family of Jean Lithgow Paul mourns the death of their beloved mother and grandmother on Sept. 7, 2008, in Westwood, at age 89.

Born on Oct. 4, 1918, she was the daughter of Leslie and Kate Lithgow of New York City. She attended the Brearley School and Vassar College.

In June 1940, she married the Rev. James A. Paul, who took up the post of vicar (later rector) of The Church of the Holy Trinity (Episcopal) in New York. After the untimely death of her husband in 1957, she raised her three children, served as president of the Ladies' Christian Union and continued to be active in the Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club and spent many summers in Wianno on Cape Cod.

In January 1981 she married Dr. Oglesby Paul (no relation to her first husband). He was then professor of cardiology and dean of admissions at the Harvard Medical School. They lived in Dedham and later at Fox Hill Village in nearby Westwood. Dr. Paul died on Dec. 22, 2007.

She had a wide circle of cherished friends with whom she kept in close touch. She leaves three children and their spouses: James and Susanne Paul, Douglas and Elizabeth Paul and Patricia and John Olive of New York City, as well as two stepchildren and spouse, Rodman and Roberta Paul, and Marguerite Paul of Atlanta, Ga. She also leaves four grandchildren, Timothy and Jonathan Paul, Nicholas Paul and Elizabeth Olive, and two stepgrandchildren, David and Andrew Paul.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 59 Court St., Dedham, MA 02026.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 421 Wianno Ave., Osterville, MA 02655.
