Jeff Livingston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2024.
Jeffrey (Jeff) Franklin Livingston, beloved husband, father, son, and friend, died on June 28, 2024 at the age of 55. Jeff was hiking with his wife and daughters in a state park in Mendocino, California when he was struck and fatally injured by a falling tree branch.

Jeff was born in Hartford, Connecticut on July 18, 1968 to Edgar James (Jim) Livingston and Thelma Livingston (Cross). He grew up in Simsbury, Connecticut and, from an early age, was passionate about film, reading, and music. He attended the University of Rochester, where he studied English and film theory. While in college, Jeff met and fell in love with Kristin Hall, with whom he spent the rest of his life. They moved to Los Angeles, California in 1995 where Jeff pursued graduate studies in film theory at UCLA. He went on to work for a number of years as a graphic designer.

Jeff was kind, funny, smart, and deeply loving. He enjoyed traveling, hiking, listening to music, watching movies, and playing guitar. Above all, Jeff treasured his time with his family and was a joyful and dedicated partner to Kristin and dad to daughters Annika and Sonja. He never missed his daughters' robotics meets and designed the team t-shirts each year. He made excellent waffles. He enjoyed playing games of all kinds and never gloated when he won, which was often. He was also a caring friend, always happy to provide help and support when needed. Although he settled in California, Jeff and his family regularly returned to the east coast to spend time with his beloved parents Thelma and Jim; cousins Rick and Susan Agro (Cross) and Robert Cross; aunt Helen Cross (Chambers); and brothers- and sisters-in-law Peter and Kristin Hall (Anderson); Michael Hall and Christy Rose; and David and Jill Hall (Meniketti).

Jeff is preceded in death by his brother Tom, who died tragically of leukemia in 2002, and his father Jim. He is survived and dearly missed by his mother Thelma, wife Kristin, daughters Annika and Sonja, and dog Juniper.

Jeff died far too soon, but he died doing what he loved: hiking with his family in a beautiful forest. During his final moments on the trail, Jeff, Kristin, Annika, and Sonja were laughing together, sharing memories of previous family hikes, and reflecting on how lucky they were to be in each other's company.

Jeffrey and I grew up directly across the street and were born 3 days apart. There was another neighbor, the same age, who was born one day apart from Jeff. It was a funny joke about it being a busy time on Butternut Lane --9 months before our births! Although Jeff and I traveled in different circles as we grew up, we stayed friendly and I enjoyed the occasional visit through the years when he and his family would visit his parents and I would visit mine. My mom would always bake for them and make sure to go over for a visit. My most sincere condolences to Kristin, Annika, Sonja and Mrs. Livingston. You are all in my heart.

Jeff was the best kind of a schoolmate to sit across from in the high school cafeteria. The daily doldrums of the school grind were quickly replaced with spirited conversations about music and movies. Although our paths never did cross again, I did think about him whenever a favorite deep cut from a favorite band hit my ears. I am glad to read that he had a full life full of love, and I wish his family peaceful thoughts and fond remembrances.

It's impossible to separate my childhood from memories of Jeff. There was a path worn by us through the woods between my house on Bob White Way and his on Butternut Lane.

Most of my childhood memories include Jeff in some way. We unboxed his first Atari together and stayed up three straight nights playing the same two games. We learned to play the guitar together, me not so well and him noticeably better. He read the first draft of my college essay, and in a way only Jeff could pull off, he let me know it wasn't very good. He was so right.

Jeff was clever, and he was FUNNY. He no doubt inherited this from his famously witty parents, Thelma and Jim. Whether it was a silly observation or a self-deprecating jab, it was impossible to spend an hour with those three and not laugh hard about something. Who else would even think to name their little puppy 'Secretariat'?

Our independent lives took over and I hadn't seen Jeff for a long time, but I was reminded of him often. I always assumed we'd hook up again soon ... and then suddenly that opportunity is lost. Jeff understood the meaning and importance of friendship and I'm so grateful to have had his.

I've attached the last photo I have of Jeff and I, which was our high school graduation in 1986. Handsome devils, weren't we? Peace to Mrs Livingston, Kristin, Annika, and Sonja.
