Jeremy Hackney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2025.
**Jeremy Robert Hackney, Sr., 53**

Jeremy Robert "Jay" Hackney, Sr., age 53, passed away on June 25, 2025, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Born on August 15, 1971, in Somers Point, New Jersey, Jeremy lived a life filled with music, laughter, and deep devotion to his family and friends.

Jeremy proudly served his country in the United States Army. His dedication to service was matched by his passion for music and his gift for bringing joy to others. A talented singer and guitarist, Jeremy played in several local bands and even released an album-sharing his voice and spirit with all who listened. His love for music was more than a hobby; it was a calling that resonated through every chord he strummed and every note he sang.

In his youth, Jeremy was an avid athlete who played both baseball and football. These early passions remained with him throughout his life as he continued to enjoy the games he once played. But above all else, Jeremy's greatest joy came from making people laugh. Known for his infectious laugh and playful sense of humor, he had a unique ability to lift spirits and bring smiles wherever he went.

Jeremy was deeply loved by his family. He is survived by his wife Maria Hackney; his mother Cynthia Durham; his sister Tammy Spragg; his uncle Pat Hogan; and his nephew Jesse Spragg. He leaves behind a legacy through his children: son Jeremy Jr., daughter Katie Lynn, stepdaughter Christy (and her children Jacob and Avery), and stepson Brian (and his son Conner). Each of them carries forward the warmth of Jeremy's love and the echoes of his laughter.

He was preceded in death by those who held special places in his heart: his biological father Raymond A. Hackney; his stepfather he lovingly called "Pop," Charles Duppel; his grandmother (his DeDot) Carol Hogan; and his aunt Georgia Mitchell.

A man of faith, Jeremy recently reaffirmed his belief in Jesus Christ through baptism alongside his sister Tammy on June 20, 2025, at Dover Pentecostals Church in Dover, Delaware. In that sacred moment, he shared with Pastor Daniel that he was ready to grow closer to the Lord-a testament to the sincerity of his spiritual journey.

Jeremy's memory will live on through the music he made, the laughter he inspired, and the love he gave so freely. He is missed beyond words but remembered with deep affection by all who knew him.

Play your music and sing for Jesus now, Jeremy-we love you always. Until we meet again.

Cindy, Tammy & Jesse I´m so sorry for your loss. Soo many fond memories of Jeremy from my senior year of high school. The dozens of times my phone would ring "whatcha doing? Can you run me to get guitar strings"? Of course I never could say no to that beautiful smile! Hanging out in his room listening to the newest "noise" he was making-I never could get into that head banging music-lol. I last spoke to Jeremy about 10 years ago! He called me up just to say hey! We reminisced a bit about the good old days! The simpler times!! I´m so grateful that I got to be a huge part of your family and got to be a part of Jeremy´s life!
