Jeyandran Gunasegaram

Dr. Jeyandran Gunasegaram passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 85.

Born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, Jey was educated at St. John's College (in Jaffna) and the University of Ceylon, where he earned his MBBS. He went on to earn Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons and earned his F.R.C.S. in both England and Edinburgh, and trained at the Institute of Urology in London before continuing his education in the United States, where he received his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He became a Diplomate of the U.S. Board of Urology and was the first urologist to qualify in Sri Lanka, the U.K., and the U.S.

Jey established a successful solo practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico, while also serving in leadership roles at Presbyterian and St. Joseph hospitals, and teaching as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Over the course of his career, he was recognized for his surgical skill. He retired from medical practice in 1995.

Jey remained connected to education throughout his life. He established scholarships and maintained ties with his alma mater, St. John's College, where he served as captain of the collegiate swim team. He also supported community health efforts through his involvement with Planned Parenthood and his philanthropy to LGBTQ organizations, demonstrating his pride in and dedication to his gay community.

Jey was the youngest son of Samuel Jeyanayagam (S.J.) and Mercy Rasamalar Gunasegaram, who preceded him in death, as did his sister Vijayadevi. He is survived by his children, Aruni, Marla (and her husband David Walker), and Jerry (and his wife Rachel Lukes); his grandchildren, Shehan, Leela, Ariana, and Liam; his brother, Wimalaraj (and his wife Shanthi) and their children, Saku, Sam, and David; his niece, Devamala; and his friends that were his chosen LBGTQ family.

A memorial service will be held as follows:

Jey's ashes will be partially distributed in Albuquerque, NM and as well as at the gravesite of his parents at St. John's College in Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
