John Brinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 11, 2025.
John Lee "Joe" Brinson, 92, of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, passed away on March 5, 2025.

Joe was born on March 2, 1933, in Pulaski County, Kentucky, to Robert and Lenora Brinson. He was the eighth of eleven children. On December 26, 1954, he married Dana Kay Hudson, and together they raised their two daughters, Rhonda and Lorna, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

With the birth of his first grandchild, Joe became known as "Popadoo." He often said that while there were many grandfathers in the world, there was only one Popadoo.

Joe was a man of great dedication and hard work. He took immense pride in his garden, tending to each row by hand with care and patience. The land behind his home flourished under his attention and became the backdrop for cherished family memories-picking corn straight from the stalk, shucking it on the porch, preparing it in the kitchen, and gathering around the table to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

In February 2021, Joe moved to Carolina Beach to live with his daughter Lorna. He embraced coastal life wholeheartedly, spending his days boating, clamming, birdwatching, enjoying fresh oysters, and relaxing on "Popadoo's Porch." For the first time in his life, his farmer's tan transformed into a full-body tan. He made friends wherever he went and was dearly loved by his beach community.

Joe was predeceased by his wife, Dana Brinson (née Hudson); his parents; sisters Alice and Faye; and brothers Raymond, Ollie, Albert, Wallace, James, Howard, Roy, and Glen.

He is survived by his daughters Rhonda (Dave) Hiltbrand and Lorna (Jimmy) Schley; grandchildren Renée (Tim) Glynn, Julie (Aaron) Taylor, and Jonathan Hiltbrand; great-grandchildren Abby Baughan, Delaney Glynn, Avery Taylor, Jonah Hiltbrand, Levi Hiltbrand, and Silas Hiltbrand; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

A celebration of life will be held on March 20-the first day of spring-at The Building in Loveland, Ohio (116 N. Karl Brown Way). The family invites guests to an open house from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. EST.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Lovis Foundation. The Lovis Foundation honors the life of a charismatic, faith-driven uniter of hearts named Logan Brinson. Logan's joyous spirit had a positive impact on everyone he met. The Foundation's mission to spread joy continues his legacy by promoting charitable initiatives that celebrate individuality and encourage others to shine.

We met Joe when he came to our PA farm in the 70's deer hunting.
It was a wonderful time which my Dad especially enjoyed. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by all.

I remember church when Joe was the song leader. His voice would boom out over the congregation. He was a man of faith; someone, whom I'm sure many people looked up to. He will be missed.

My uncle Joe, I loved him so much...His passing is a great loss.
I will always treasure my time and many memories. What special love we shared.
Joe was a giver, grew his garden and shared with others. He shared his knowledge and wisdom
not just about the garden, but about about life in general, he taught me so much. We often called each other between getting together just to chat about anything and everything.
He was a very smart, kind, and logical. We shared a great sense of humor... and always had
a good laugh about something each and everytime we were together. He and my Dad we greatest of friends. All my life
Mom, Dad, Dana, and Joe ...always together.
We lost My Dad I adored, and My wonderful Aunt Dana. That left Joe and Mom from the famous 4
Now we lost our Joe. Again my heart is broken.
When Joe moved due to health reasons, we missed him so much.
We were able to visit him some at his new home in NC. Lorna and Jimmy would bring him to town some. We were able to see him in both worlds. He loved and missed everyone. But what a wonderful life he had in Carolina Beach too. He often told me how Lorna & Jimmy treated him like a King.
The weather and water was so enjoyable. I can say he did love it, I saw
It with my own eyes.
Lorna and Jimmy made Life Great and included him in everything. I know Joe loved life, loved Dana, love his Children and Grandkids
Love his Family, and loved God. He was grateful for all God's
Goodness. I know I will always be thankful for
having had Joe in my life.

My Uncle Joe was one of the very finest men I have ever known. He and my dad were closer than brothers. Uncle Joe was a devoted follower of His God and Savior, Jesus the Son of God. My earliest memories of him are leading the worship services at the Batavia, Ohio Church of the Nazarene. He was instrumental in my conversion to Christ. He taught me how to grow a garden, hunt, and fish. He truly was a second father to me. I look ahead to seeing Dad, Joe, Dana and others in that wondrous place God calls heaven someday. Til then, my uncle and friend, may you rest gently in the presence of our mighty Redeemer. Till then...
