John McKenzie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 22, 2023.
On November 20, 2023, John "Lawton" McKenzie, 66, of Ball Ground, GA, passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife, Kim (McKenzie) at his side after losing his 10 month battle to glioblastoma.

Lawton was one of the kindest people many had the pleasure to call friend. He was a great leader and mentor. Many co-workers have attributed their success to him. He was quite handy with tools and could fix, repair, replace, or re-build almost anything. He was always among the first to volunteer when a friend or family member was in need. His favorite hobby and passion was motorcycling. His favorite place to ride was the North GA Mountains. He also loved boating, kayaking, waterfall hikes, and pickleball.

The youngest of three, Lawton was born on September 12, 1957, to John and Vivienne McKenzie in Greenville, S.C. After graduating high school in 1975, he earned a technical degree in automotive repairs from DeKalb College. He began his career in the automotive industry working at Parts Country until he landed his career position at Troncalli Motors in 1979, kick starting a 43 year career.

Lawton is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kimberly, their children Mark Lawton McKenzie and wife Elizabeth, Michael Keele McKenzie, and Cameron Wade McKenzie and husband Christopher Bates. Forever remembered by his siblings Wade McKenzie and Karen McKenzie Shadle and her husband Jim; Don Martin and wife Darleene and Donna Martin Williams and husband Larry. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Vivienne McKenzie and Joselyn "Jo" McKenzie

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Agape Hospice Care for their compassion and support.

A Celebration of life will be planned in January. In lieu of flowers Lawton requested donations to St. Jude Children's Hospital. https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?px=8242111&fr_id=154020&pg=personal

So much of what I know and do every day was taught to me by Lawton, and I am eternally grateful for knowing him and having him teach me. Not only did he have a tremendous impact on my career, but also on other people as well, whether they knew it or not. You know how Nick Saban has a coaching tree at Alabama? In Atlanta, there's a parts manager tree and Lawton was the tree trunk. May he rest in peace.

Hello Kim, Sorry to hear about John's passing. With him gone, there may be an empty seat at the dinning table, but his memories are always in your and family's heart. May god bless him and your family.

Jim and I went to see Kim and Lawton a couple of months back. At this time he was still joking around and having a beer with Jimmy. The four of us talked for a while on their deck with the sun shining on us. This was a beautiful day with old friends! Lawton you were always so kind to everyone you met! But I will remember that day forever! We all will miss you,
