To Mary McLaury, Diane, and the McLaury Family,
My parents told me of Mr. McLaury's passing this week. Please know that you are all in my prayers now and in the days ahead. Your dad was a larger-than-life figure to me as shy little girl, but I always felt this sense of deep kindness he had about him.

To Tom & Donna: I graduated from Rockhurst the same year John did from Lillis. I remember him when I was in the prosecutors office as a police officer, and I seem to recall his being in the TACT unit, a fearsome lot. My clearest memory though is playing basketball against him our senior years. We both played center and I think he originated "trash talk", because he kept saying, whenever I got the ball, "Hook, Fat Boy", a taunt I can hear plainly today. Clearly, he had little respect for my awsome hook shot, and it made me so mad I almost broke the backboard every time I tried, thus jproving that trash talk works. You have my deep sympathy, Tom, on the loss of your brother.

I am so sorry for your loss. Since the first time I met the McLaury clan when Thomas and Diann were dating, so many years ago; everyone always treated John and me like we were part of the family. I feel lucky to have known Mr. McLaury and hope the memories of your wonderful husband and family gives you strength in such a difficult time.

Memories of my Uncle John:
Going night swimming (always a treat) with him and my Dad after a day at the house on Sni A Bar, probably Mary's famous tacos. Mom and Mary stayed behind to clean up and enjoy a little quiet time and probably a beer or two. On one of my many overnight stays, he taught Susan, John and I the state capitols and we thought we were having fun. He was Santa every year on Christmas Eve until my cousin Paul grew into the suit and the responsibilities. Straight man to my dad's comedic genius (ha ha Daddy). Grandma always still had a basket for him on Easter because he was the baby. He was only one of a handful a people who called my mother Gin, my favorite name for her. During my troubled teen years the name McLaury on my drivers license helped me out more than once (but not more than twice!) Once when I was trying to get into a concert at the stadium without a ticket he let me in, probably thought he could keep a better eye on me that way. More recently, during a hard time in my life, he sat with me at a funeral, arm around me and held my hand through the Our Father. He made me feel less alone that day. Uncle John was a good husband, father, brother, uncle, son, and obviously friend to many. Godspeed, I love you.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. McLaury. When I heard the news my first thought was that one of the good guys is gone; though it's a bit darker here, heaven is surely a grander place these past few days. What a great example of a family man he was. You have so much of him to keep with you. May you continue to find the strength you need for as long as you need it. God bless and keep you all.

Mary,
As you know, it has only been 6 weeks that I have been where you are today, so I know the loss you feel. Keep all the sacred memories that you and John held dear. Words can never express what needs to be said, but I am so sorry that you have lost your life partner, the man that you shared every dream with.
Just know that this is a process, and allow it to flow in God’s timing, in a way that only you can handle. There are no words that I can say or that anyone can say to help you through this process. I know that you have a loving God that will guide you each step of the way, as it is said in Matthew 6: 33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
You also have an amazing family and a host of friends that will be there for you to lean on. Allow the love of God to flow through them to you.
John will truly be missed.
I am taking your sorrow to the feet of Jesus in prayer.
