John Olsvik Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 13 to May 14, 2006.
John 'Red' Olsvik, 78, of Two Harbors, died surrounded in love by his family, in St. Luke's Hospice on Thursday, May 11. Red was born March 30, 1928 in Two Harbors to Dorothy and John Olsvik and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1946. Many in the region remember him as a wonderful high school basketball athlete. His love for sports was passed on to his family and continued throughout his life. Red attended Hursch Business College in Duluth and was employed by the City of Two Harbors for 38 years, serving as the City Clerk and Treasurer. Though he loved to travel around the country and world with his wife and family, he was proud to call Two Harbors his life-long home. Red was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and served as its treasurer and as a trustee for many years. He served on the Lake County Historical Board, City Library Board, City Industrial Council, TH Federal Credit Union Board, and TH Community Building Board, working hard to make a difference in his beloved community. Red volunteered for meals on wheels for 16 years and was a life member of the Moose Lodge and Sons of Norway. He was recognized as Two Harbors' Citizen of the Year in 1980. Many friends and family in the community will miss Red's friendly smile and twinkling eyes. His parents preceded him in death. Red is survived by his loving wife Helen of 55 years; five daughters, Nancy (Rich) Ojard of Knife River, Barb (Alec) Staffon of Duluth, Sally (Dana) Murphy of Two Harbors, Amy Mehl of Otsego and Julie Olsvik of Duluth; his nine grandchildren, Nels, Bjorn, Amanda, Lief, Ryan, Danielle, Jesse, Clint, Lindsey, and his first great grandchild, Evelyn Ojard were Red's pride and joy. VISITATION:10 a.m.-11 a.m. service, Monday, May 15, 2006 in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Memorials preferred to Emmanuel Lutheran Building Fund or Two Harbors' City Library. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy to you, Helen, and the family at this time. We just got back from AZ. and had a problem that had to be taken care of, or would have come to the funeral.

HI:I worked with Red at the City Hall for 24 years. I found his honesty and work ethics outstanding and he was an excellent role model for me. He had to work under stressful conditions, at times, with the council and the public, but he was always fair and a man of good heart. I will miss him dearly.
