John Schnoor Obituary

John Schnoor

Altoona

John Franklin Schnoor, husband, father, golfer, bridge player, good friend, and all around hard-headed know-it-all son of a gun who planned to live forever...didn't. To the shock of all who came to know his boisterous personality, John passed quietly and peacefully Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the age of 81 surrounded by his wife, Jana, and children, Jon and Johanna.

His brand of wit wasn't readily accepted by those who never really wanted to or took the time to get to know him. But for anyone who could muster the patience to get through 5 minutes with him, they would be rewarded by a friendship that willingly offered his last ounce of being for anything they needed.

John was born in Winfield, Kansas in 1935. In 1969 he came to Iowa for one year to teach, but stayed for 47 more. He tortured students and athletes alike as a teacher and coach at East High School, but was ever in support of the Scarlets.

Always on the go, John enjoyed contests of all kinds. If he wasn't watching his children at their athletic pursuits, he could be found on the golf course or at one of the many local high school events in the area. In addition to his enjoyment of athletics, he was a Life Master in Duplicate Bridge and enjoyed traveling to play in national and regional tournaments around the country.

Often disregarding the wishes of his doctors and through, what seemed to his family to be every ailment in the known universe that had steadily taken away his independence, his body kept ticking away. His well-known stubbornness wouldn't let his body give up, until Sunday.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. He was never one for such occasions.

Jana and family,

I was sorry to learn of John's passing. I had started searching for what teachers I remember being influential to me and started focusing on searching for my Goodrell Middle School, art teacher, Jana Schnoor. I stumbled across this obituary in my search and it saddened me to learn of John's passing as I remembered him well when I attended EHS from 86-90. His smile, boisterousness, and spirit reminded me of my father, who also departed this plain of existence in 2014.

My condolences to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Bruce Copeland

Jana, so sorry to hear of Johns passing. I lost track of you and have often thought about you. My mom (Marie Sheil) worked for Larry Katz in the little green building in WDM Hope you are doing OK. I lost my husband 2 years ago.
