John W. Sharkey Jr.

June 4, 1946 - February 9, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John W. Sharkey Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, on February 9, 2025, at the age of 78.

Born to John and Mary Sharkey on June 4, 1946, in East Falls, John grew up alongside his brother, Peter, and was a proud product of the Philadelphia community. He attended St. Bridget's, LaSalle College High School, and later LaSalle University, where he laid the foundation for a life of service, integrity, and dedication.

John bravely answered the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War. A member of the 3rd Platoon, Company D, 2/12th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade, John's exceptional leadership and courage led to his promotion to Company RTO (Radio Transmit Operator) and later Battalion RTO. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his distinguished service and was honorably discharged as an E5 Sergeant. His time in Vietnam shaped his character and his commitment to his country and his family.

In 1972, John married Patricia Lynch (Pat), and together they built a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. John was incredibly proud of his children: Tricia, Michael (Colleen), and Kelly (Joe), and delighted in the joy his grandchildren brought him. As "Poppy" to Brayden, Connor, Joey, and Kyle, John's legacy will live on in the love and warmth he shared with his family.

John's career as a Philadelphia Police Officer spanned 17 years, where he served with distinction in the 23rd District and Airport Unit. After retiring from the Police Department, John continued his work in service to others as the Director of Security at Cathedral Village. He always put others first, and his dedication to his family, community, and country was unwavering.

In 2008, after the passing of his beloved wife Pat, John was fortunate to find love again with Debbie Gaeta. Together, they formed a strong and loving partnership, enjoying many dinner dates and cherished moments. John embraced his role as a devoted stepfather to Brittany Becker, welcoming her into his family with open arms.

John's family was the heart of his life, and his impact on those who knew him is immeasurable. His kindness, strength, and sense of humor will be deeply missed.

John's wishes were for him to be cremated, and inurnment services will be held in June at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Relatives and friends are invited to share their condolences and memories on this page. John's life will be celebrated by those who loved him, and his memory will forever be cherished.

John cheered for every player on Mike´s team as if every kid was his own son. A loyal, loving, humorous, and proud man that I respected greatly.

I worked with John on the police department and later at cathedral Village, where he was my boss. He was a great boss, a fair guy with more integrity than anyone I ever met. I will miss him and grateful and indebted to him for hiring me at Cathedral Village . goodbye old friend may you rest in peace. Charles Long and Darcelle Long.
