John Talmage Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2022.
Known to most as Jack, John Frelinghuysen Talmage II, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2022. The son of Edyth Elliman Talmage and Prentice Talmage, Jack was born May 14, 1937. Pre-deceased by his sister Rev. Edyth Knapp Baker and brother Prentice Talmage, Jr., Jack is survived by his son Jake (Misse), grandchildren Anna and Will, sister Caroline T. Sloan, nephews L. Crowell Baker (Patty), Rob Sloan (Michele), Prent Sloan (Jane), Lockwood Sloan, niece Jan Baker (Dan) and their children.
A lifelong resident of Long Island, Jack graduated Lawrence Country Day before attending St. Paul's School (NH), and Salisbury School (CT) as a boarding student who loved hockey. Jack attended one semester at Franklin and Marshall (PA) before returning to Long Island to work and play hockey. After losing a bet that he could not gain admission, Jack attended and graduated from Hofstra University.
Jack was a fiercely independent person who valued loyalty. His career included working as gun room manager at Abercrombie & Fitch, serving as a real estate broker with Douglas, Elliman, Gibbons and Ives Inc., and owning his own companies-- John F. Talmage Real Estate and Bentley Corners Sporting Art Gallery which specialized in sporting art originals and limited-edition prints.
In his spare time, Jack pursued his passion for the outdoors by fishing, boating, skeet and trap shooting, hunting, and raising/training his beloved Labrador retrievers. He was a long-time member of Rockaway Hunting Club, Lawrence Beach Club, Cedarhurst Yacht Club, The Long Island Wyandanch Club, and Holland Lodge #8. Jack was also a committed volunteer. He served on the vestry at Trinity St. John's Church in Hewlett, on the Board of Governors for the Lawrence Association, and as Game Warden of the Village of Lawrence. He was also incredibly devoted to Ducks Unlimited vice-chairing New York State, chairing the New York City Dinner Committee and serving as NY State Sponsor Chairman. Jack was also a National Trustee and Sponsor in Perpetuity of the organization.
A private memorial will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to Ducks Unlimited in Jack's honor through https://www.ducks.org/get-involved/memorial-giving
