John Marvin Toon, 92, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Morristown Manor in Morristown.
He was born July 13, 1931, in Morristown, the son of Carter and Frances (Bass) Toon. On June 20, 1953, he married his wife of 70 years, Marjorie Wilson, and she survives.
In addition to Marjorie, John is survived by his daughter, Janet Richardson and husband, Scott, of Shelbyville; son, Tim Toon of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Alex Richardson, J.D. Richardson and wife, Liza, and Daniel Richardson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, James C. Toon.
In 1949, John graduated from Morristown High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany from 1953 to 1955. John was a member of American Legion Post No. 102, in Morristown.
John was a lifelong farmer. He was also a self-employed truck driver, retiring in 2011.
He enjoyed collecting pocket knives and arrowheads.
John also leaves behind his dog, Frisky.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August, 2, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the funeral home, with Pastor Hubert Nolan officiating.
Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown, with military graveside rites conducted by the local military committee.
Memorial contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 2345 W. 86th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46260.
