John Wallace Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2024.
John Victor Wallace, 79, of Edinburgh, Scotland, kicked the bucket on February 21, 2023 in Round Rock, Texas. He was born on July 18, 1943 in Scotland to his late parents Agnes Douglas Wallace (Muir) and Thomas (Tommy) Wallace. John was a loving partner to Shez Louise Thomson, who rudely passed away shortly after him.

From his early days in the stone ages at North Merchiston Primary in Edinburgh to his time at Dumfries Academy, John's education laid the foundation for his long career at the post office in Scotland where he began at 18 and rose through the ranks. Starting at the counter, he eventually became a Union Secretary for the Union of Postal Workers (UPW) in his mid-20s. He was then promoted to Postal Executive C at West Port House, the Scottish Post office HQ in Edinburgh. In his early 30s, he further advanced his career as Postal Executive B.

One of John's proudest career moments was winning the Scotsman Paper Cup, an early computer-based business simulation competition. His team beat over 150 other companies, showcasing their skills in product development, manufacturing, and sales. Despite this early computer success, he still called his son, Cory, for technical support. This achievement led to John's promotion to Head Postmaster in Ayr in the 1980s and later to District Manager of Counters in Ayrshire. He completed his career at the Post Office in the Glasgow District Office, where he oversaw operations in the west of Scotland.

In the early '90s John moved across the pond to the United States. He began work at the Round Rock Leader (later the Austin American-Statesman), where he rose to Distribution Manager. Additionally, he briefly worked at Wendy's to satisfy his son Cory's love for chicken nuggets and free toys.

Outside of his career, John had a passion for football (or "soccer, as the silly Americans call it" he would say). In his younger years, he played for several teams in Dumfries, including "The Standard," "Larchfield," and "Terggles." John's love for the sport was evident throughout his life as he cheered on Manchester United to his last breath.

John will be remembered as the kindest person one could know. He had a heart of gold and was always willing to help. His sense of humor brought joy to those around him, and his Scottish vulgarity has been well adopted by his son Cory and 4-year old grandson, Desmond. Although rarely angered, you knew he was on fire when he would say "That really gets on my tits!". John's Scottish heritage was an integral part of his identity, and he embodied the qualities of a true Scotsman: funny, stubborn, loving, caring, and fiercely proud.

He is survived by his children, Janet, Douglas, John, Helen, and Cory Wallace, as well as his step-daughter Sara Soto. John was also a beloved uncle to Iain and Kevin Gibson. He held a special place in his heart for his favorite in-laws, Dee and (only slightly redneck) Mark Pharr. Lastly, the inside jokes shared between John and his daughter-in-law Elyssa, will be remembered as shining examples of sarcastic humor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Eleanor Gibson and his uncle Ronnie Wallace.

A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held on Saturday, February 17th, at 3:00pm. The service will take place at La Margarita, located at 1530 I 35 N Frontage Rd, Round Rock, TX 78681 (mostly because we though Outback Steakhouse would come across as a failed attempt at being classy). For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live-streamed via webcam at http://bit.ly/JohnToHouston. This will provide an opportunity for those far away to see, hear, and share stories during the service.

John was an avid dog lover (and even cats in his later years). He joins his cherished dogs from Scotland at the rainbow bridge - Fergus, Merc, Ben, Seb, and Hallion. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Dr. Jeff's Rocky Mountain Valley Vet / Planned Pethood International. Contributions can be made online at https://www.nfggive.org/donation/84-1522523.

John will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, humor, and love will forever be cherished in our hearts.

I met John in 2006. I thought he was one of the sweetest people I´ve ever met. We got along so well. He charmed this Texas gal with that accent! I loved seeing his relationship with Cory. No dad was ever prouder of his son. The world has lost something very wonderful with his death. They just don´t make them like John anymore.

Meeting him before I married his ex. I never met a guy who loved his kids so much. He was a character for sure, and we became friendly. I was sad to hear of his demise, but I can sure hear him telling God "That's not how you cook fish & chips!"

Dad was a shining example of kindness and care. Although I have a very long way to go, I try and be more like him every day. I think about you every day. Saying you'll be missed is a grand understatement. I love you dad.
