Coach Joe & myself @ NCA cheer camp 2008 @ UCCS - Colorado Springs, CO
Charles Palalay
March 3, 2011
Joseph was my coach/mentor. He always had a smile on his face and he was always there to help me out or even when i needed someone to talk to. I remember at NCA west coast staff training in Los Angeles he was the only coach that helped me out when it came to partner stunting. I remember one thing he mentioned to me:
"No matter how tall or how short you are it's all about what's inside that counts, which is your heart and passion for what you love to do..."
When he told me that he made a big influence on me. He helped me become more confidence in myself. I also remember back in 2008 when we had an NCA cheer camp @ UCCS in Colorado Springs he always helped me become more comfortable in instructing.
The last time i saw him was when he was leaving back to San Diego from Colorado Springs at the airport. i remember spending time with him for an hour or two and i remember he told me before he left:
"Good luck in everything you do, and don't forget what i told you..."
I will always remember Joseph as Coach Joe. He was a great mentor/coach. I will make sure to always remember what he has taught me, the conversations, and the lessons he has showed me. My prayers and thoughts go out the his family, friends, fiance', and all the people he had a big influence on. I enjoyed the time i had with you Coach Joe. I'll miss you Coach Joe.

Joe:
We did martial arts together in the 90's. I remember you were so full of energy and spirit. I'm shocked and very sad at your passing. Although we haven't spoken for many years I feel a loss. Rest well. You impacted many in your short time. You are truly missed.

I had the unique privilege of working with Joseph during the production of "What's the Vig?." His humor, laughter and energy was infectious. I admired his commitment to not only his work on the film but to his students. During breaks he would grade his student's homework and tell me some of his favorite stories from teaching. He told me one in particular. "I never thought I was accepted as a member of the faculty until I saw some graffiti in the boy's room disparaging me." I won't go into what was written, but his reaction to it was priceless. That is how I shall remember you, Joseph. Priceless.

Oh Joseph I remember you had almost too much energy for me! We worked on "What's the Vig?" as well as a music video deep in the woods. Your life was cut much too short. My deepest sympothy to your family.
June 16, 2010
Joseph, always positive, uplifting, energetic, even when the others were feeling down and stressed. Throughout the shooting of our film, "What's the Vig?" there was never anyone with a more generous spirit. Actor and choreographer for our dance number, he made everyone smile along with him. I am very sad. -- Al Stoffel

Joseph, you were a man of such warmth, generosity and incredible spirit. I will always remember the fun times we shared working on "What's The Vig?" and I will always remember the happiness I felt when we randomly found ourselves placed at the same dinner seating on that cruise in 09. May you bring your large personality to the heavens and make things shine just a bit more bright with you there.

I knew Joe back in the day when we used to call him "Balanka" I don't know if that was because Blanka was the character he used in Street Fighter II or if it was because of his chest hair. But I'll always have fond memories of him and the goofball he was. My prayers go out to Cheryl and the rest of the Balan family. God Bless.

Joe will be missed by everyone he knew, he had that positive energy that you always wanted around. I went to Bell Junior High and Morse High with Joe. I didn't keep in touch too much, but I once got a transfer student who spoke highly of his math teacher. Come to find out, that teacher was Joe Balan. I promptly called Granger and chopped it up with Joe. A great guy, he will be missed. My deepest condolences to the Balan family, and his fiance.
See you later, Joe. I know God will be smiling upon meeting you.

I knew Joe since my first year as a NCA Staffer. He was one of the first people that I've met in the company and had the kindest heart and amazing spirit. He truly is a person that I could never forget because he shared the best memory of my NCA career and that was at the 2007 Gonzaga camp in Washington. Hes been one of the biggest inspirations to continue to do what I love doing, regardless of what others think. I will forever miss him. May his spirit live on through us, his students, co workers, friends, etc.

For all that knew Joe, he was a passionate and beautiful soul. His love for cheer and teaching others was truly like non-other and I know he is missed by all who were touched by him. Joe always marched to his own tune and regardless of what others thought he never compromised who he was and what he stood for and for that we will never forget you. I know your students and friends will be comforted by the thought that you are looking down on them from heaven above and waiting to great them at the pearly gates in true Joe fashion.
