Joseph Rochel Hendrick, III, age 29, passed away Friday, February 10, 2023. Joseph was born on September 1, 1993 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Mary Beckwith Moore Boinest and Joseph R. Hendrick, Jr.
Joseph was a 2012 graduate of Shelby High School and a 2016 graduate of Appalachian State University, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing, and a minor in Supply Chain Management. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he was baptized, confirmed, and served as acolyte.
Joseph loved competition and fellowship in sports and succeeded in most things he tried. He was recognized as a scholar athlete during all years of high school, where he participated in soccer, swimming, and tennis. He was a member of the men's soccer team that won the state championship in both 2010 and 2011. Joseph competed on the state level in swimming and earned conference, regional, and state titles in tennis. In college he participated as a quarterback for his intramural football team and was also a member of an intramural basketball team. He loved to throw 3 pointers that were all net, a skill which he mastered when playing corn hole as well.
One thing Joseph was well known for was his kind heart and willingness to help his friends in need, while also building them up. He loved nothing more than making people smile and making people laugh. When Joseph smiled, you knew it came straight from the heart. Some of his favorite memories were holidays spent with his cousins and time he spent with his many friends over the years.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Joseph Rochel Hendrick, Sr, and Mary Anne Hendrick, both of Shelby.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Beckwith Moore Boinest (Becky) & his stepfather, Munro Lebby Boinest, III (Trip) of Cherryville, his father, Dr. Joseph Hendrick Jr (Joe) and his stepmother, Dr. Lori Ann Gordon Hendrick of Shelby; his sister, Dr. Katherine Beckwith Hendrick of Asheville, stepsister, Jordan Boinest Hollett, (Ronald) of Atlanta, Lydia Christian Boinest of Asheville, Kaitlyn Cierra Freeman of Shelby and stepbrother, Brandon Cody Gordon Freeman of Kings Mountain. Also, left to cherish his memory are grandparents, Nathaniel Henry Moore, Jr. and Lois Florette Peele Moore of Washington, NC; aunts, Lois Moore Reaves, (Donald) of Raleigh, Carolyn Moore Mitchell, (Bob) of Cary, Margaret Moore Spitler, (David) of Oxford and cousins, Robert Nathaniel (Nate) Reaves, (Raphaelle), Austin Haywood Reaves, Colin Moore Reaves, Greyson Alexander Mitchell, Davis Moore Mitchell, Elizabeth Pope Mitchell, Anna Kathleen Spitler, Samuel David Spitler, and Joshua Henry Spitler.
The service will be held in the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home & Crematory, Saturday, February 18th, 2023 at 4pm. Burial will follow the service at Sunset Cemetery.

Since I learned of Joseph's death, I have been sorrowfully praying for all of you. I remember him fondly through the years. I prayed for him before he was even born, since Becky and I were pregnant together. From the church nursery at Central Methodist, to being his Classroom Mom at Jefferson Elementary, to the YMCA soccer fields, to being Alex's doubles partner at Shelby High and being on the 2012 state tennis championship team, I have watched him grow into the kind, polite, intelligent, and handsome man that he was. All of you had a part in making him into that person, and you are blessed that he was in your lives. I can't imagine the pain, grief, and loss you are experiencing from a life left unfinished that was so full of promise. He will be with you always. He will be missed. Jeannie Smith (formerly Tillman)

My deepest condolences to Joseph’s entire family. I went to high school with Joseph where we played in orchestra together, and hung out occasionally at Appalachian state before I transferred schools. If you needed someone to talk to or needed cheering up Joe was always your guy. He was one of those people that always knew what to say to brighten your day. A beautiful soul with such a kind, gentle heart. Keeping your family in my thoughts.

I am so sorry for your loss. I really enjoyed watching Joseph play HS soccer along with my son Ryan they were the best team I think Mr. Steve's ever coached. I did not know Joseph very well off the soccer field but I knew of his accomplishments he was a very gifted young man. I will keep your family in my heart and prayers.

I was so sorry to read about the death of young Joseph. I only know his father, Dr. Joseph Hendrick, Jr. and his wife, Dr. Lori Hendrick, but I send my deepest sympathy to the entire family of young Joseph Hendrick. It is so sad to lose a child at any age, but it is heartbreaking that this young man lost his life at the age of 29. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.

Joe was my neighbor. He was a very smart, talented, and loving person. He wanted the best for everyone even if that meant he took a step back on his own happiness. I will never forget all the talks we had and all of the encouraging words that he had for me during a really rough time in my life. I hope that he is at peace. It was a pleasure knowing you Joe. I pray for your family as they go through this difficult time.
