Joseph Rethmeier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2011.
Joseph V. Rethmeier

Des Moines

While surrounded by his loved ones, Joseph V. Rethmeier passed peacefully from this world on Friday, August 5, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, IA. He will always be remembered by those who knew him for his generous nature and acts of kindness; thus, it is fitting that his final contribution to the world was by participating in the organ donor program so that others may live.

Joseph was born on August 3, 1981 in Marshalltown, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1999. He obtained his post-secondary education and training through Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny, where he earned the Associates in Applied Science in Automechanics Technology. Joseph proudly obtained employment with Willis Auto Campus as a Master Automotive Technician in Des Moines, Iowa. He always enjoyed working with his hands and found pleasure in fixing that which was broken.

One of Joseph's greatest pleasures was to spend time outdoors. One could find him casting a line in the water, or even witness him jumping in to chase after his nephew Ty's fishing pole, stolen suddenly by a spirited catfish. Joseph was a devoted uncle who lavished affection upon his niece, Gianna, as well. His love of the outdoors extended to organized sports, both by his participation and as a fan looking on from the grandstand. His favorite teams included the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs, and the Denver Broncos. Joseph anticipated deer season as a hunter. He also felt most content when spending time with his significant other, Jaime Allpress, who encouraged his pursuits in life and loved him completely.

Joseph was an intelligent man, a music aficionado, and well-read, with an enthusiasm for good literature. His favorite quote is from the Lord of the Rings series, "Not all who wander are lost." Joseph's own propensity to wander would also define him. His experiences and travels allowed him to grow, building many lasting friendships throughout the years. He shared and developed his talents, and at times selflessly relocated in order to be present for those who needed his support during difficult times. His endeavors were only partially fulfilled during his short 30 years, yet he touched the lives of many who will forever remember his deeds. His family and friends offer their thanks and eternal love as they free him to "wander" in spirit wherever his heart desires.

Joseph is survived by his mother Jody (Paglia) Goode and step-father Rusty Goode. Their fondest memories reside in the heart of their home…a place where laughter, love, and familiar scents filled the air as they experimented with both new and old family recipes. His mother Jody held his hand from the time he was a child until he parted this world. Joseph is also survived by his father Daniel Rethmeier who was a guiding force in his son's future trade by teaching some of the skills necessary at an early age and through their work together.

Joe is also survived by his sisters: Jennifer Rethmeier of Canton, Connecticut and Danielle (Nick Iaria) Rethmeier of Des Moines, his stepsister Jennifer (Darwin) Roth of Denver, Colorado, his stepbrother Christopher Goode of Des Moines, his grandparents: Joe (Betty) Paglia of Marshalltown and his grandfather Verne Rethmeier of Paola, Kansas, his uncles: Jay (Kristen Monroe) Paglia of Marshalltown, and Wade (Tiffany Lynch) Paglia of Marshalltown, his aunts Michelle (John) Herman Jr. of Paola, Kansas and Cynthia Pilkington of Lincoln, Nebraska, his nephew Ty Joseph Rethmeier and his niece Gianna Iaria, his cousin Josh (Angie) Paglia of Bondurant, several other nieces, nephews and cousins and his girlfriend Jaime Allpress of Altoona.

Joe was preceded in death by his grandmother Dorma Rethmeier and his uncle Ken Rethmeier.

We invite friends to attend Joseph's visitation, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home: 1209 Iowa Ave West, Marshalltown, IA 50158. A celebration of Joseph's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home as well. At this time memorial contributions may be directed to the Joe Rethmeier Memorial Fund.
