Judith Berman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 10, 2024.
Logical, thoughtful, analytical and whip smart, Judy Berman, our dear friend and much loved sister, aunt and partner, left this world on June 8th, 2024.

Despite her unique training and immense knowledge of all the in and outs of the medical profession, first as an oncology nurse and then as a medical malpractice attorney, she could not defeat a monstrous and nearly always fatal pancreatic cancer. To the very end, the attributes that had made her so unique throughout her life were evident - the logic, the preparation, the professionalism and the love and caring for family and friends were on abundant display until her last breath.

Her generosity was evident in life and will continue after her passing. Her selflessness too. Just weeks ago she sent Fin, her beautiful companion and buddy, a gorgeous black and white English setter, to live with her brother and sister in law in Texas. She knew then she would never see him again. If you've ever had a dog you loved, you know how hard that was - especially under the circumstances. But it was the right thing to do, and for Judy the right thing was always the only thing that mattered.

She spent many great years with her husband Shelly, who preceded her in death. Hopefully they will find each other now, and have time to bitch about the Ohio State Buckeyes coach, O line, D line, QB, take your pick - they will surely find a reason to bang a table in frustration.

Judy's large Irish family is far too numerous to begin to list here. Suffice it to say they, and many friends, came from all over the country to say goodbye and knew, with great certainty, what they will miss in this woman's unique character and immense intelligence.

We are all better for having known Judy. Her presence in our lives was an irreplaceable gift we will cherish until we meet again.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Timothy's Catholic Church on Friday, June 14th, at 10:30 am. Family will greet guests prior to mass, beginning at 9:30 am.

A luncheon in Judith's honor will immediately follow at Aubergine Dining Club, 1265 Grandview Avenue, Grandview Heights, Ohio 43212.

Private internment at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to two scholarships Judith established: The Mary Jo Leonard Mount Carmel Foundation School of Nursing Scholarship Or The Sheldon M Berman Memorial Endowment, School of Communications at The Ohio State University.

I met Judith when I moved to Phoenix to work for then, Catholic Healthcare West, managing claims and litigation. Judith was a great lawyer and became a trusted friend. She was wicked smart and had a wit to match it. The Ohio State vs Michigan football gatherings were great fun, exciting and I learned to make buckeyes . But mostly what I learned was what a caring person she was. She went with me to my 1st meeting with my surgeon when I was diagnosed with breast CA in 2007 and helped me hear what I need to hear and talk through options. She came at 6 am when I called to tell her that I found my beloved pup on the dining room floor and did not know what to do. We had many Friday night talks and laughs at the Four Seasons solving the problems of the world......I know she fought hard for Shelly and no doubt put up a valiant fight for herself. Peace and blessings to all those she has left behind. GO O-H-I-O

Dear Jo and Family.
Judy and I were unlikely friends, but we had much in common

I hope she had as much fun as I did at our lunches, phone calls, and book club meetings.
We laughed a lot and decided that the world would be a better place if we were in charge.

I am glad I knew her and I will miss her.
