Recording artist and children's television performer Judy Valentine (Berkal), a well-known personality from the Golden Age of Television in Greater Boston, passed away on August 26 at the age of 99. Born Norma Baker in Boston in 1923, as a youth she lived with her family in Lowell. In the 1940's she worked at radio station WEEI as a secretary where she met – and later married – disc jockey and song writer Sherm Feller, who became instrumental in promoting her career as a recording artist. The two hosted a program, Club Midnight, featuring live performances/interviews with many music artists visiting the Boston area. She recorded more than 30 songs, including "She Was Five And He Was Ten" (charting in Top Ten) and "Kiss Me Sweet," the latter having the distinction of being banned by some radio stations due to a suggestive "pause" delivered during one of the song's lines (unintended by the performer). During the 1960's she divorced, and later remarried to an attorney, Leonard Berkal. Valentine was best known, however, for her singing and dancing performances as a primary cast member of the decade-long running "The Bozo Show" on WHDH/Channel 5. She was the last of the surviving performers of the "Big 3" of Boston children's television programs of the 1960's ("The Major Mudd Show" [Ed McDonnell], "Boom Town" [Rex Trailer], and "The Bozo Show" [Frank Avruch, Valentine]). After departing the program to raise her two children, she remained active largely in charitable activities, particularly those to benefit children, including work at North Shore Children's Hospital in Salem. She is survived by her daughter, Shari, and her son, Ross. Funeral Services will be private.

I first met Judy when we were both in a production of Sondheim's "Follies" at the Colonial Chorus community theater in Reading, MA in 1985. Our paths would cross from time to time over the ensuing decades, and even when we had not seen each other for years, she would always remember my name and greet me with a smile and a hug. She was the sweetest lady I have ever met.

God bless and RIP Judy....I remember you sooo well. I remember delivering newspapers to you and Lenny on Naugus Ave., Marblehead with my paper-route when I was just a kid. I remember going on the Bozo Show on ch. 5 WHDH -TV back in the 60's. I remember taking you out for lunch at Legal Seafood on #114 Peabody *several years ago. Called your home in Lynnfield several times over the years just to say "hi". I just now called and sadly learned of your passing. Sweet, sweet lady you were. RIP Judy. Love Kurt von Sternberg

We lost a beautiful soul on Friday. My dear sweet angel friend of 35 years has left this earth. The imprint on my life will be cherished forever in my heart to fill the gaping hole that has been left.
I can hear her sweet voice singing to me, her contagious laugh and see her twinkling eyes as she would look up at me as I gave her spa treatments. Our moments that we shared with one another were truly blessings as she would share with me, Dawn always have music in your life and then she would sing to me. I would sing to her, and she would applaud! I loved that, as I cannot carry a tune, but she made me feel like I had a beautiful voice.
She touched many lives in her lifetime, not just mine. I loved her for being my friend, my confidante and silent cheerleader behind the scenes always saying, good things are coming
She would share, I stand a lot taller when I'm with you. We all need someone in our lives that tells us this. She was a gift to me and my mum, part of our family.
May she have a soft landing in heaven and continue to dance and serenade! I can hear her singing to God in her sweet voice and hearing her giggle as he asks her to dance, and she says I'd be delighted
Heaven will not be the same as our earth angel brings her music and blessings for all to relish in.
I love you my sweet angel friend! carrying you in my heart forever. I am the woman I am with your influence - confident to sing loud and strong but know you were my only audience that appreciated my unique voice - lol
With infinite love ❤ I carry you with me until I dance and sing with you once again!
God bless. He is the lucky one now!
I
