Kathleen Hyman Cohen was born May 4, 1922 in Pamplico, SC, a daughter of Ida and Hoyt Hyman. She graduated from Coker College in 1943 with a BA in History. Known by her nickname, Kat, she taught elementary school in Andrews and Darlington, SC. She is predeceased by her husband, David Alexander Cohen, Jr., and her brothers; John Andrew Hyman, Hoyt Sumter Hyman, Lonnie Hyman and Leroy Hyman.
She was a member of Beth Israel Congregation in Florence. For decades, she was an avid member of the Castillian Book Club and the Darlington Associated Club. She also enjoyed being a member of two local bridge clubs. Volunteering at both Coleman-Almar Hospital and at Wilson Hospital, Kat rendered comfort and understanding to patients for many years. To add joy to the lives of family, friends and the ill, she was known to bring homemade rolls, baked goodies and fresh cut flowers.
Kat is survived by a sister, Ollie May Poppie Munn; four grown children, Dr. Alexander (Dyan) Cohen of the home, Dr. David Andrew (Margaret) Cohen of Hawthorne, FL, Kathleen Cohen (Kemper) Brand of Lugoff, SC and Daniel Coleman Cohen of Savannah, GA; and five grandchildren; Kemper Brand, David Cohen, Kathleen Brand, Kathleen Bess Cohen and Virginia Cohen.
Memorials may be made to the David A. Cohen, Jr. Scholarship Fund of the Darlington Kiwanis Club (P.O. Box 28, Darlington, SC, 29532) or to Beth Israel Congregation (316 Park Avenue, Florence, SC, 29501).
