Kelly DRADER Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Feb. 25 to Feb. 27, 2014.
DRADER, Kelly Ivan
August 12, 1956 - Edmonton, AB
February 22, 2014 - Canmore, AB
Kelly Ivan Drader passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 22, 2014. The world has lost an irrepressible spirit, a loving husband of over 33 years, a doting father, a caring godfather, a brilliant business mind and a dear friend to so many. A native Albertan, Kelly grew up in Haysboro with sisters Debbie and Darcy and brothers Kevin and Dean. He was predeceased by his parents Don and Norma. He leaves behind his soul-mate and first and only dearest love Jan as well as two lovely and heartbroken daughters, Ginny (David) and Natalie. Kelly graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce and then articled and received his Chartered Accountant designation two years thereafter. After working for Touche Ross & Co. as an auditor, he entered the oil and gas industry with Westburne Petroleum rising to Treasurer. Never content to march to another's drum, he left Westburne to join what is now Enerplus Corporation in its infancy in 1987 and was instrumental in the remarkable growth and success of that organization for fourteen years. His ingenuity and passion for business are well documented. He and his mentor Marcel Tremblay, championed the Royalty Trust Model, growing Enerplus to be the flagship of the royalty trust fleet. Leaving his position as Senior Vice President of Enerplus in 2001, he sought a fresh challenge starting a new energy trust company, Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. This was subsequently split into two entities, Advantage and Longview Oil Corp. Excited by the growth potential of Longview, Kelly was President and CEO of that company until his passing. The oil and gas business is a dynamic and ever-evolving industry and Kelly was an innovator who embraced those challenges with unflagging optimism. Somehow he always managed to see opportunity where many others could not. That refreshing energy and outlook remained undaunted over a career spanning 34 years. He was fond of saying, "I've been lucky, and the harder I work, the luckier I get." On the outside he was driven to succeed, unrelenting and imaginative in "getting the deal across the goal line", but inside he also had great compassion and cared deeply for the well- being of his employees. Kelly's approach to all facets of his life never changed. He lived life in overdrive with no rear-view mirror. Whether it was excelling at high school football, competing in minor and later adult hockey, winning a football scholarship at Treasure Valley Idaho, achieving a near perfect GPA at university, acing his CA exams, golfing and joking with his buddies at Willow Park, cross country skiing or hiking with his girls, preparing to be a grandfather, cheering on the Steelers and the Flames or ensuring that he and Jan visited each and every site of interest on every holiday, Kelly burned through life with unbridled enthusiasm and at a pace beyond the ability of most others. Beyond all of that however, and always first and foremost, he was a dedicated family man, deeply devoted and fiercely protective of his two daughters, proud as he could be of his new son-in-law, intensely excited about the impending arrival of his first grandchild and, to the end, hopelessly head over heels in love with Jan. Funeral Services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 - 15 Avenue S.W.) on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 - 14 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 (Telephone 403-264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca). I am so shocked at hearing this news. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Kelly was the best boss I ever had. He gave me my first break in the Oil and Gas industry. He was a genuine guy. He will truly be missed. He opened a door for me and I will always remember his laughter and easy going attitude. I am shocked to hear the news now and wish I was there to give my support to his family and friends. RIP my boss and dear friend.

I am very saddened to hear of the loss of your husband, father and brother. I remember Kelly as a mischevious little boy throwing rocks at me on our walks home from kindergarten, through our first few years at Eugene Coste, then again high school and university years, where he met Jan. I've been thinking of all these memories over the past few days and how very sorry I am for your loss.

Dear Jan, Ginny and Natalie,

My deepest condolences on the tremendous loss of a wonderful husband and father taken so suddenly, and too soon. I will always remember Kelly as the formidable force and coolest big cousin from times spent at the little house in Haysboro. So many wonderful memories of that megawatt smile. May your strength and love from each other, and friends and family, guide you through these tragic days and help you to find some peace and light in the darkness.

Love to you all.

Janice, Natalie, Ginny & David: I am so very sorry to hear of Kelly's passing on Saturday - what a shock. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him, worked for him or having the honour of a mere acquaintence. I have had the priviledge of working with Kelly at Advantage/Longview for the past 6-1/2 years and he always had a bright smile and a hello when you met him in the hallways. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Our deepest sympathy to Jan and the Drader family. I learned a lot from Kelly during the years we were associated and enjoyed his positive outlook on life and friendship that we shared at the Enerplus organization. Jan, I will forever remember you cuddled in Kelly's arms with your head buried in his chest scared to death to look out as we ascended the Eiffel tower. I am so sorry that we will not be able to attend the service on Friday and want you to know that our thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

Kelly was one of my best friends. We met each other in E.P. Scarlett High school and reconnected as early morning Golf buddies at Willowpark G and CC 18 years ago. Kelly was always willing to give someone a hand up and hired Michelle to start her in a career transition in to Land. We spent many hours during and after Golf talking about the oil industry, life and family. He inspired me to start my company by giving us our first deal, but most of all through encouragement and advice that carried on through the last 8 years. I always knew I could call Kelly and get an educated and strait answer. I finally convinced him to join our board just a year and half ago. He was a great addition and will be missed by all of the directors and staff.

To Jan, Ginny, Natalie and David, please know as I am sure you do how much he truly loved all of you. Our deepest sympathy for your loss from all of us at Painted Pony, as well as from Michelle and I. I will really miss my Dear friend and advisor.

May the peace of God be with him and those left behind.

My deepest condolences go out to the Drader family. Kelly was my business partner, loyal friend, advisor, and a man I grew to love as a brother over a twenty five year period. He showed great concern for the business, the employees, and the shareholders. We faced many trials together and he met each one head on with an unusual strong will to beat the challenge.

On a personal note his concern for my family and I will be remembered for the rest of my life. The world lost a great man on Saturday. I pray that his family find comfort and peace with the memories they have of being so close to this larger than life family oriented man who left all too soon.

It was an honor to work for Kelly. He also provided me with several opportunities though out my career. I had enormous respect for his extremely creative mind. He was always kind, respectful and always had an open door and an available ear. I will deeply miss him. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the entire family and hope that you can find some comfort with the kind words and thoughts from all of his friends

He was instrumental in my career. He gave me a shot out of high school. Let me work through college and then gave me the best reference anyone could ever ask for. Without him my family would not be where it is today. He will be greatly missed. He has touched many lives and made this world a better place.

Drader Family
My condolences to you all, words cannot describe your loss, just know many understand. I knew Kelly since little league baseball in Haysboro and our professional paths crossed many times over the ensuing 50 years. Kelly was bright, articulate and always had an interesting perspective. But I found early on he had a deep passion for his family and faith, and he shared this with me on many occassions. He had a moral compass that kept him balanced and on course.
