Laura Margaret Brooks WIGHT

WIGHT, Laura Margaret Brooks, 81 of St. Petersburg, beloved mother and "Nana," died Sunday Aug. 26, 2012 with family and friend by her side. Born in Providence, RI she came here in 1956 with her noble spouse of 51 years, Winfield E. Wight Jr. who predeceased her in 2006. Laura was an active member of the Florida Suncoast Opera Guild for almost 50 years serving as President and in various other officer and board positions. She loved that the Guild supported and encouraged talented young singers. She was also on the board of directors for the 1970s children's theater group, "Sunshine Kids in Production" (SKIP). After her children were grown, Nana worked in the law office of her husband, played bridge at the St. Petersburg Country Club and traveled to visit family. She was known as a "sweetheart" of a woman with a deep love of her family, friends, opera, silly poems and Steven Colbert. Survivors include four daughters, Linda Mazur, Valley Village, CA., Leslie Route, Newnan, GA, Laurie Gray, Houston, and Leigh Anna Reichenbach, Wilmette, IL; a sister, Lucille Brooks Gentile, North Haven, CT; and 9 grandchildren. A private family memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Suncoast Opera Guild. www.flsuncoastoperaguild.org.
