Malcolm Phillips Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 29, 2025.
Malcolm "Misha" Phillips, beloved brother, pastor, and friend, passed away on May 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, ministry, and global fellowship. Born on December 17, 1958, at the Mercer Cottage Hospital in Mercer, Pennsylvania, to Henry Kenneth Phillips and Mae Curtis Phillips, Malcolm was shaped by a strong family tradition of faith and service. He idolized his grandfather, a devoted minister who mentored Malcolm and nurtured in him a deep and enduring call to ministry.

From an early age, Malcolm was drawn to the world beyond his doorstep. He pursued his passion for international understanding through his education, studying Soviet and East European Studies at the University of Oklahoma and Columbia Pacific University, and earning a degree in Political Science from Rose State College in 1977. His academic path reflected his growing dedication to the people of Ukraine, a country he came to love deeply and serve faithfully through years of missionary work.

Malcolm's professional life was equally defined by his call to serve. He spent nearly two decades at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), where he built lifelong friendships and was honored to minister to coworkers through weddings, memorials, and pastoral care. Upon retiring in 2020, he embraced his long-awaited vocation in full-time cross-cultural ministry. As the International Ministry Pastor at Mok Yang Presbyterian Church in Fairfax Station, Virginia, he devoted himself to a diverse global congregation with joy, humility, and unwavering dedication.

Malcolm was also a civic leader, serving as Chairman of the Arlington Sister City Association from 2013 to 2018, helping foster international exchange and understanding.

To know Malcolm was to be seen, remembered, and cherished. He had an extraordinary gift for staying connected. For Malcolm, the world was his family, and he loved everyone in it. Whether through a late-night phone call, a handwritten note, or a prayer offered across time zones, he made people feel valued and never alone. He built bridges, not boundaries.

Malcolm is lovingly remembered by his brothers Vincent and Keith Phillips, his uncle David C. Phillips, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren, and cherished friends across the globe, especially in Ukraine. His kindness, humor, wisdom, and faithful presence remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.

Malcolm "Misha" Phillips answered a higher call-in life, and now, he has answered the final call home. He leaves behind a radiant legacy of faith, service, and love without borders.

Misha had a huge heart for orphans here in Ukraine and this is how we met. He took them to markets to buy new clothing and food for the money he raised in his home churches I remember persuading him to buy warmer jacket for himself, since the winters were severe in Ukraine, but he would wear only thin embroydered national shirt saying he feels warm from inside His big heart left the footprint in the lives of many. So sorry, Misha, you had to feel the pain, but I'm sure, my brother, Jesus met you with his holy embraces! Will always remember you, all the .conversations and this warm dinner in the Turkish restaurant. Feels like it was a week ago

Malcolm had a powerful positive impact on so many people's lives. Everyone he spoke with came away feeling loved and valued. We need more Malcolm's in the world today. While we miss his physical presence, I know he is still serving as a guardian angel in the next world.

A few years ago, Malcolm was in town for a few days. He contacted me and asked if he could buy me lunch and visit. He told me then that I was one of the few that made him feel like he was something! That's the first time I cried while having a meal. Rest in Peace Malcolm. You will be greatly missed my friend.

Malcolm/Misha, I will miss you even though I know you are in a better place. We did so many things to together and you introduced me to Youngs Memorial in SE, DC; met some of your family here in our area; we worked on many projects together; had my first trip to Lviv, Ukraine in Aug 2008 when we took 2 grads and 5 teen girls on a mission trip there. It was very memorable and I fell in love with Ukraine and its people as you had after going in 2005. We got to see Krakow, Poland; Berlin, Strilky, Sofiya and met her family; and other places in Lviv and the camp that we did. After that, I would go with you every Christmas (January 6th) and summer to do camps, shopping with those from Strilky and then other internauts and then so MANY other cities/villages in Ukraine. I will miss our adventures during COVID, travels, Warrenton times, and our impromptu meals together and of course, car shopping - more than once. May your family be comforted at these hard times and for all that grieving brings as with so many friends, like myself, who will miss you until we meet again. I know you're quizzing SO MANY family, history figures, etc to quench your thirst of learning history.
