Marc Emard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 11 to Jan. 12, 2010.
MARC RAYMOND EMARD It is with great sorrow and regret that we must say farewell to our beloved son, brother, husband, father and friend. Marc was born on June 23rd 1958 in Cornwall, Ontario and his life ended suddenly on January 9th 2010 in Saskatoon, SK. Marc was predeceased by his grandparents, Eva and Edgar Levasseur; his aunt, Edith and his uncle Pierre Hogue. He leaves in mourning his wife, Jo-Ann of 19 years; his daughter, Marieve (17) and his son Joel (15); his parents, Laurence and Louis; his sisters, Joane, (Brian Young), children, Mackenzie, Meredyth, Daniele (Denis Ferre), children Sophie, Jean-Michel, Samuel and Nathalie (Peter Friebel), child Mika; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marc was a very well educated individual. He received his primary and secondary education in Cornwall, ON and in Rigaud, PQ respectively. His university career was as brilliant as it was varied. After obtaining a BA Honours degree in Physical Education from the University of Ottawa in 1979, his academic journey brought him to Saskatchewan where he obtained his Bachelor of Education in 1980. In 1985 Marc studied at UBC where he graduated with a degree in Recreation Education. Marc's thirst for learning didn't stop there. At the University of Waterloo in 1990, he received a Masters Degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies. Marc's life was truly a celebration of love, joy and optimism. His professional career was one to be emulated and his love of young people was visible in each of the positions he held. The first years were spent as a classroom teacher. Subsequently, Marc was appointed Vice Principal in Saskatoon French School, St. Matthew School and St. Gerard School before serving as a principal in St. Gerard, St. Matthew and St. Paul Schools. Marc's loves were many the deepest were of family and Church. Marc was a doting husband and father, who practiced POF Putting Others First. This quality of love was evident in his devotion and involvement in church and church activities. Marc, a member of Saint Martyrs Canadiens parish, participated in liturgy and was member of the Knights of Columbus council 8301. Other loves included sports, and most particularly, hockey -which he played and watched with exaggerated fervour. Needless to say his preferred team was the glorious Canadiens de Montreal. Many people will fondly think of Marc as a fun-loving and humorous individual who often enjoyed playing practical jokes. He was known to possess an arsenal of jokes ready to be delivered as the occasions required. He managed to tease almost every one in his life. Above all, we will remember Marc as a dependable and loving person who gave of himself freely. There were many journeys with great challenges in Marc's life. One of these was his courageous and successful battle against cancer. The fight against cancer became a cause for him and his family. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. "Marc etait un mari et un pere devoue, un fils et un frere sans pareil qui sera toujours avec nous en esprit. Ses lecons de vie nous serviront de guide et surtout nous donneront de l'espoir et de la confiance. On t'aime Marc notre Bud!!. Vigil for Marc will be held on Wednesday, January 13th, at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Fr. Bernard de Margerie presiding and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January, 14th, at 10:30 a.m. with The Very Rev. Ron Beechinor as the celebrant. Both services held at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Place). You are invited to share your memories of Marc through the following website www.remembering.ca . Arrangements in care of David Polzen MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200).

Dearest Jo-Ann, Marieve, Joel, Daniele, Denis and family,
One month ago, the world changed. Life has a different meaning because of the impact Marc has made in my life, Tony's and my kids. There aren't enough words to express the sadness and loss of this special man.
Marc's smile; his laugh; his sincere manner always made you feel like he cared.
Marc's love of life; his family; his work was obvious in everything he did.
Marc's "secret" pancake recipe he made for staff; his personal cards he gave thanking me for my efforts in any extra-curricular activity; his endless supply of suckers and he always let Stefanie and Olivia chose the color. Thomas was touched to have been a part of the school memorial mass for "M. Emard".
Time goes on and days go by but the laughter and memories of Marc will remain close to my heart and my family's and live forever through you, his family.
We love you!
Anna

Ah, qu’on riait tant!

The first time I met Marc was at St. Paul's School, in 1990. Actually I didn't meet him so much as see him hurrying around the school, greeting people and getting things done. He was obviously happy to be there and lent such energy to the place!

I was registering my children for school as I had just moved from Prince Albert. My children never had Marc as a classroom teacher but Lee Ann had him for Phys Ed as well as a coach. She loved Marc and held him in very high regard. As for me, entering University to become a teacher, I held him as an example for the sort of professional I would like to become.

It was with joy therefore that in my first job, I had him as VP at Saskatoon French School. It was a dynamic group of teachers and directors that have made those years very memorable.

I remember specifically Marc helping me out with a certain heartache I had experienced. HIs concern and kind words were very helpful. I also remember a poster in his room that shared the thought that we were called to know ourselves and to become our best selves not necessarily to compete against others.

My teaching career next brought me in contact with Jo-Ann. Another wonderful blessing. While Marc's energy was the first thing you noticed, followed closely by his caring and efficiency, Jo-Ann's compassion was the first thing I noticed about her, followed closely by her proffesionalism and finesse in carrrying out this beautiful compassion.

I am forever grateful for the help and understanding, the prayers and words expressed by her, as well as the time she took to share with my son and I in our need.

I can only hope and pray that I would know the right words to say, the right things to do to help Jo-Ann and her own children.

My younger daughter, a Grade 8 student, was thrilled to have Marc as a principal at ST. Paul's School. "He is the best principal ever", she stated this fall.

Like her older sister, twenty years hence, she recognized the greatness in Marc. I am so glad he touched their lives and mine.

He will be greatly and sadly missed. Please know Jo-Ann, Marieve and Joel, that we will continue our prayers for you and that we are but a phone call away if you need our assistance in any way.

Marc was an exceptional person. I am so honoured to have worked with him and more so to have known him.

I remember how fast he walked down the halls at St. Gerard School always on the go, always serving others.

I remember him silently praying before eating his lunch.

I remember going into his office one day and noticing all of his degrees. I teased him by saying: "T'es éduqué toi." And Marc smiled and was maybe taken aback that I teased him (because we all know, who was so good at teasing others!)

I remember how he and I would talk about his family - about how Mariève was excelling in gymnastics and about how Joël loved the sport of basketball. He was so proud and his eyes shone when he talked about his kids.

I remember how concerned he was about my family. Always checking in on them by inquiring how they were doing.

But what I remember the most about Marc Émard was that he transformed me from a disillusioned young teacher to one with more confidence and faith. He gave me my wings when I thought I couldn't do it anymore. He took the time to encourage when people were down, to listen when people needed to be heard, to heal when people were broken. I am so thankful and so blessed to have been given this miraculous opportunity to have had such an influencial person in my life.

I will cherish every memory, every card, every laugh and joke, every piece of advice he gave to me. His presence has changed in all of our lives, but he is ever so present.

Dear Jo-Anne,

It is with both sadness and gratitude that I write this note to you.

On behalf of my children and I,I want to express our appreciation and thoughts to you for the gifts you and Marc gave to me and my children. You had such an impact on our little family when we were at St Thomas, and so it was a blessing and a delight for us to move to St. Matthew to meet Marc. Your commitment and dedication to your work and your students was reflected in his work and welcoming nature when we transitioned from one school to the other.

Moreso in my memory Jo-Anne was the courage and commitment you both shared and which we had the good fortune to see when Anna was your student. You and Marc were so incredibly kind to us when we came to visit you during your illness. Your kindness and compassion made us feel at ease.

Jo-Anne, I trust you have many wonderful memories to cherish and savor, and to keep the spirit of your husband and father alive forever.

With our sincere sympathy and celebration for a wonderful life and legacy,

My deepest condolences to the family of M.Émard on his passing. I had him as a teacher at École St.Paul, and my memories of him are all happy ones. His positive energy and enthusiasm were contagious, and he had a way of bringing out the best in those around him. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Bon courage, Joanne. On pense beaucoup à toi, ici à Puerto Vallarta.

Marc was a great person! He was my principal at St.Matthew school for six years. He was the hardest working person I have ever met in my life. He cared about all of the staff and students at the school and always put others before himself. One great memory of him was his playing the game 'tag' with the students. He would come up to us in the hallway and tag us. When we would try to tag him,he would always call 'T' before we got him.He will be missed very much.

I had the pleasure of having Marc as my grade 8 teacher at St. Gerard. He supported and guided me throughout the year in academics, sports and other facets of life. We also got along because we both had great hockey sense cheering for Les Canadiens du Montréal. Thanks to Marc's continued advice and support over the years I find myself finishing up my Education degree. I find that I try to incorporate and emulate many of Marc's qualities in my own teaching. Marc has touched the lives of many students and I wanted to share my thanks.

When I think of Marc I always come back to one memory from my grade 8 year. Three friends and I had gotten our hands on two gel ice packs. One ripped and we found them substance to be very slippery. We took the two ice packs and spread the substance all over the floor of the bathroom and proceeded to spend the next few minutes sliding around. Marc ended up walking in. We all froze. Instead of scolding us Marc smiled and said," You know, if I was your age I might be in the same position you are right now." He asked us to clean up, replace the ice packs and nothing further was said. He had our respect without a doubt for the remainder of the year.

It was said best at the service this morning that Marc was a friend to his students. In my opinion this couldn't be truer. Marc will be greatly missed.

Our condolences and prayers go out to you for the great loss you have suffered. We have learned to appreciate Marc mainly "vicariously" by seeing the impact he has had in our daughter's Olivia's life. What an awesome person to see him greeting the children at the beginning and end of the day, to be able to joke with them. He was able to make Olivia feel special, a trait few in this world have. The genuine, heart-felt concern he had for her when he brought her back from a ski trip where she broke her arm was another sign what a true disciple of Christ Marc was, living Christ's New Commandment to love one another as Christ loved us. His gift for touching children's lives was precious and will be sorely missed.

I thought to share a funny story about Marc from last September. Marc and Joel were hosting our flag football team wind-up at their backyard pool. I had brought a cesaer salad with a big bottle of Kraft dressing to be put on closer to meal time. As the hamburgers were grilling, Marc informed me he had added the salad dressing and it was ready to go with the comment "I dumped the whole bottle in, do you think it will be enough?" This wasn't a very large salad and I am sure most adults would have added one-third of the bottle at the most, but Marc had the last laugh as all the boys loved it (he obviously had listened to his and other children complain too many times about "not enough dressing"). I am still not sure about his culinary skills, but he knew what kids liked.

I had the pleasure of coaching flag football with Marc the past few years and also spent some time with him in the gym watching our sons play basketball. Marc definetely did put others first. He was a kind and caring man who gladly gave of his time. We will really miss him.

Our deepest condolences to the Emard family, Marc was the epitome of manhood ! Kind, gentle, humourous, committed, and how many more great charecteristics he possessed. We will always think of him this way. Take care and God bless you !

To our boys, Liam and Ben, Marc will always be the amazing principal who kept an on-going slow version of tag in the hallways, was obsessed with Les Canadiens, wore an orange toque when supervising the busses, and kept lollipops in a bucket in his office. To my husband and I he will always be the honest, thoughtful, concerned and caring man who touched everyone he met. Marc helped us through such difficult times and I will never forget his kindness. I will always cherish the opportunities I had to work with him, joke with him, and talk with him about more serious matters. My family and I will miss and mourn him for a long time. To the Emard family: Marc often spoke of you and every time he did his love and pride showed. We can only hope that the prayers of your family and friends will help to support you. Our thoughts are with you.

Dear Jo-Ann, Marieve and Joel,
Marian and I were deeply shocked to hear of Marc's sudden death. Who, among us, knows when we will be called? There must be a greater purpose for Marc. When we met in November at St. Gerard's 50th celebration, we remember how very happy everyone was to see each other , so full of hope for the future. I remember Marc as a young teacher, full of promise and aspiring to become a principal in the Catholic School System. I was an advocate for him, basing my recommendation on how he interacted with other teachers, the students and parents; but more than that, basing it on his strength of character which was so evident. I was not proven wrong!
To you Jo-Ann, I have a special recollection of you as a great teacher at St. Gerard's - you were a strong, honest, devoted teacher and I hope that those characteristics will carry you through this most difficult time.
To Daniele, Denis and family, we also extend our sincere thoughts and sympathy.
We will keep you and your family in our hearts and prayers - may our Creator grant Marc eternal peace.
Love - Ray and Marian Phaneuf

In a sea of people, Marc had a way of letting each person know they were important and valued. He seemed to remember everyone & have time for everyone. He had a tremendous heart with compassion & energy for all in his path.
His love for his family was apparent even though I didn't have the privilege of meeting you.
He was tireless in his work and seemed to have a gift of bringing out the best in others.
As principal at St. Matthew, he gave a large school the atmosphere of a large, yet close knit family. He was a great leader. His absence will be felt by all of us. He leaves an amazing legacy behind him.
To his family - I am so sorry for your loss, my heart and mind cannot comprehend what you are going through. You have the love and prayers of our family.
May God carry you through this.
