Margaret Mullins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 24, 2025.
Ft. Myers - Margaret Price Mullins, 103, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, at Cypress Cove Community in Fort Myers, Florida.

Known to her friends as Maggie, she was born in Buffalo, New York, to Mississippi-born parents who returned to their home state when she was a year old. She grew up in Mississippi and graduated from Mississippi State College for Women, now Mississippi University for Women.

Maggie earned a master's degree in Sociology from the University of North Carolina and began her professional life in Atlanta, where she worked for the Southern Regional Council. There, she conducted research documenting the inequality of segregation-work that contributed to court challenges during the Civil Rights Movement. While in Atlanta, she met and married Stephen Delon Mullins.

The couple eventually settled in Clearwater, Florida, where they lived for 25 years. In her 50s, Maggie returned to graduate school at the University of South Florida, earning a degree in Mental Health Counseling. She went on to work as a licensed counselor until her retirement at age 72.

In 1983, Maggie and Steve moved to Sanibel Island, where both continued their professional work. Maggie was a charter member of the Zonta Club of Sanibel and remained deeply engaged in service and community. After relocating to Cypress Cove Retirement Community in 2004, she continued to share her passion for personal growth and lifelong learning by introducing and leading classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Living.

Maggie had a wide range of interests that sustained her throughout her life, including meditation, walking, bird watching, yoga, tai chi, gardening, reading, politics, and world affairs. Her curiosity, compassion, and love of learning inspired those around her.

She is survived by her three children: Susan, of Tampa, FL; David and daughter-in-law Rose Rushbrooke, of Ocean Park, WA; and Christopher and son-in-law Brad Hart, of Manzanita, OR, along with several nieces and nephews.
