Mark Battaglia Mark Battaglia unexpectedly passed away at home Tuesday, April 10, 2007. He was the beloved husband of Jo and tender father to Deborah, Fred, Elizabeth and Ben. He also leaves behind his mother, Frances; brother, Chuck; sister-in-law, Lisa; daughter-in-law, SaraBeth; son-in-law, Ron; two grandchildren, Anthony and Alex; two nieces, Laura and Amy; and two nephews, Brian and Stephen. He was Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture at Penn State for 30 years. During that time, he also carried on a professional practice with fellow Professor Emeritus, Dan Jones. He was an ardent hunter and fisherman, and traveled the world fulfilling these pursuits during his retirement. We welcome all friends to an informal memorial gathering to be held Saturday, April 14, 2007, between noon and 6 p.m., at the Battaglia family home.

Dear Battaglia Family,
I recently heard of Mark's passing from a fellow LARCH classmate and am deeply saddened by the news. Mark's unique approach to teaching landscape architecture was an inspiration that has influenced the vast majority of PSU graduates. I honestly feel that I learned and gained more from Mark from our discussions held outside the classroom. My deepest sinceritites are extended during this disheartening time.

Professor Battaglia was a great teacher. I am a Larch graduate ('91). He had a very strong quiet presence. When he spoke it was because he had something very meaningful to say. He was a great inspiration to all. I am very sorry to hear about your loss.

To the Battaglia Family:
Professor Battaglia was an honest person with a huge, gentle heart. He said so much with just a smile. He taught his principle of Designing from the Heart and was extremely passionate about doing so. Mark left an impression on all who crossed his path and will live on in those memories and professional influences.

Dear Battaglia Family,

I graduated from Penn State Larch Dept, 20 years ago and I can honsetly say the Prof. Bat had a significant impact on my life as a person and as a landscape architect. He was a tough professor but an excellent one, that made you consider all the possibilities. He instilled in me the design ethic to never settle or do anything half fast and to always give a 150%. I greatly valued his opinion and comments.
His has touched a lot of people and will be remembered fondly by all.
You are all in our thoughts,

Professor Battaglia was a great teacher and a wonderful inspiration. He was the first to "turn the light bulb on"...I can remember the exact moment and I draw upon that each and every day of my career.

I feel honored to have shared in his memorable life. My deepest condolences to his family.

My husband and I are both PSU LARCH Grads. Though years apart, we share the same memories of Prof. Battaglia that are described by other former students in this guestbook. He was one of those rare individuals that exuded truth, integrity, creativity and soul, with little or no words required. He was a testament not only to what is good about the profession, but to what is good about the human spirit. I am sure you realize that he will live on in this way. We are very sorry for your loss and hope that the lasting positive impact of Professor Battaglia's life will comfort you at this difficult time. Mark and Lisa (Eppley) Pelusi

To the Battaglia family:
I was saddened to hear of your loss, as we all share in it with you as those who knew him as a mentor, professor, and friend. He was one of the most down to earth and honest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I learned volumes from him about the profession of landscape architecture, as well as about life in general and what it means to be a good person. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

Professor Battaglia was a quiet, unassuming man who was best known for getting straight to the point. You always knew where you stood with him whether he gave you smile and a wink for approval or if he handed you a roll of trace and told you to start over. His quiet, sneaky shuffle and coffee stains on drawings will be remembered and missed by his students.

To the Battaglia family, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Professor Battaglia was one of those rare people who had this way of quietly touching your life and, before you knew it, you found yourself knowing that he would be one of the coolest people you'd ever be lucky enough to meet. He will be missed on so many levels.

Very sad news to hear. Professor Battaglia was very influential in development as a student and now in my career as a Landscape Architect. He taught me to "think outside of the box" before it became the popular phrase. He once asked me "if being a Landscape Architect was the right path for me". It was at that point I decided to take the practice seriously. Well nearly 20 years into my career, I guess the answer to his question to me was "yes".

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Dear Mrs. Battaglia and Family,

I am truly saddened to learn of Mark's passing. He will be remembered by his students as an outstanding educator and all-around good guy. I am sure that you will be strengthened by a tremendous outpouring of support over the next days, weeks and months to come. Professor Bat (or "Bat Man" as we affectionately referred to him) was more than just a professor to his students. He was our friend.

May God bless you and your family,
David Dickson (Class of 1985)

Professor Battaglia's passion for the profession of landscape architecture made him an outstanding teacher, mentor and friend to all of his students in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Penn State.

I personally hold many fond memories of having studio classes and desk critiques with Mark. He had a unique style of teaching that personally guided me to a career in the profession.

We should all be grateful for the time and efforts he gave to teaching his students at Penn State. The profession has lost one of its true champions.

Mark's legacy will live on through the experiences of those whom he taught, mentored and guided.

My deepest sympathies...
