Marquis Harper Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 3, 2011.
Marquis S. Harper was born on June 25, 1988, the proud son of Charlene Harper and Paul Shelly. He spent his childhood days growing up in the City of Newark, New Jersey in the New Community Neighborhood. He loved and was loved by everyone and became called by the nickname "Mut Mut". His face was one that after meeting him you could never forget because of his unique smile, which always showed in a special way. To "Mut Mut" everyone was somebody special. Marquis was educated in the Newark Public School System. It was at Camden Middle Street School his interest in sports became obvious. Taking a liking to basketball, beginning to grow up, you could always find him at the basketball court of Camden Middle School. As he progressed, he continued his favorite sport (basketball) at Technology High School, where he gained merits in the sports arena. He was very happy as a basketball team player for his High School team. Marquis eventually completed High School and went on to Kean University of Union, New Jersey, also course studies at Essex County College of Newark, New Jersey. Basketball continued to be one of his main interests; he could look at television as long as a basketball game was on. It was this inspiration, and his studies, that caused him to decide to go on to California to finish his studies and basketball career. He had goals and dreams to achieve and was determined to complete them. Marquis loved life and lived it to the fullest. His love for God had begun to grow, and his understanding of the bible, shortly before his death. Marquis attended church where his father delivered a message that impacted him in a very special way. The same message he brought home and shared with his grandmother and family; 2 Corinthians 5:21 "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him". Marquis Harper leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Charlene Harper; his father, Paul Shelly; and his wife, Sylvina Shelly; six siblings: Isa Williams, Tamika Harris, Sabriyyah and Shayla Shelly, Odaja and Oscar Hill; four grandparents: Mae Harper, Eddie Cooper, Oliver Shelly (deceased) and Mattie Lee Shelly (deceased). Thirteen aunts: Mavis Scott, Barbara Hamilton, Jennifer Sanders, Rosie Lee, Alberta Hunt, Shirley Mackey, Francesca Shelly, Mattie Shelly, Celeste Oyekanmi, Jacqueline Shelly, Emily Mohabeer, Valerie Shelly, and Ernestine Augustine. Eight uncles: Ferdette Dennis Harper, William Harper, Tony Cooper, William Cooper, Eddie Cooper Jr., Dennis Lucas (deceased), and Alonzo Shelly; and a large company of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, his New Community family and friends.
