TYLER — Services for Marvin Allen Calloway, 77, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Greater St. Mary Baptist Church in Tyler and 2 p.m. at Pleasant Green Baptist Church in Longview. Mr. Calloway was born July 12, 1934, to the parentage of Walter and Ennis Calloway.
Mr. Calloway was an educator, businessman and farmer/rancher. He graduated from Ned E. Williams High School in Longview and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wiley College. Mr. Calloway received a Master of Science degree from Texas A&M University, Commerce (East Texas State University). He furthered his education at the University of Texas at Tyler, Stephen F. Austin State University, University of Houston, University of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, St. Mary University and Temple University.
His educational career spanned almost four decades, including two years in the United States Army. Mr. Calloway taught science at Bruce High School in Gilmer and Stewart and Hubbard junior high schools in Tyler. He also served the Tyler Independent School District in other positions, including visiting teacher and assistant principal at Hogg Middle School, where he retired in 1994.
Impacting the lives of young people was a lifelong commitment for Mr. Calloway, who established the Robert Calloway Scholarship at McKinney ISD and Pleasant Green Baptist Church and funded other educational foundations. He was instrumental in securing markers for Grable Cemetery and Pleasant Green Baptist Church.
He worked at Briarwood and Emerald Bay country clubs as a professional bartender and assistant manager. He had business interests, including Big Z Variety Store, was owner and operator of Double C Farms and had interests in the Service Cleaners in Longview.
Mr. Calloway was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 40 years, Ethel; son, Marvin II; granddaughter, Charmarica; sister, Georgia; brother, William (Lois) of Longview; aunt, Lucille Smith Brown of Tatum; and many relatives and friends.

Visitation will be noon-6 p.m. today, May 18, 2012, at Brooks Sterling & Garrett Funeral Directors.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at Brooks Sterling & Garrett Funeral Directors Chapel and 7:30 p.m by the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. The body may be viewed from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, at the church, prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
