Mary Ekstrand Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2025.
Mary Ann Ekstrand, born Nov. 21, 1923, in Pieštany, a spa town in Slovakia, passed away at home in Manhattan on Aug. 23, 2025, at the incredible age of 101. The beloved mother of Linda Ekstrand and grandmother of Evan Drellich, Mary was the widow of Kogie Ekstrand and was predeceased by her sister, Jean (Nom) Harris, and her brother, Emil Rosner. Her parents were Isidor and Pauline Rosner.

A fixture for decades at Doctors Hospital in Manhattan, Mary was as charming as she was resilient. She loved dachshunds, WQXR, royal history, Jeopardy!, Schaller & Weber and trips to Bloomingdale's with her grandson. She volunteered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and spoke several languages.

Mary adored her nieces and nephews, Constance, Michael, Curry and Adam, and their children, Tanya, Ali, Phil, James, Nathan, Sam, Matthew and Anna. She also leaves behind her cousin Avi and dear friends Josh, Doug, Mary, Maura, Kathy, Vicky and Martha.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ASPCA.
