Mary was born in Jackson, Ms. where she attended Central High School and Millsaps College. She retired after 16 years of employment with The Bookkeepers bookstore in Mountain Brook, Al. Mary volunteered for many years delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels organization. Along with her husband Paul she also donated her time at the Firehouse Shelter in Birmingham as well as serving meals on Christmas day at Children's of Alabama. Mary and Paul Hopkins were active supporters of The Exceptional Foundation. She was a longtime active member or Edgewood Presbyterian church in Homewood, Al. where she served as a Deacon and Elder, and received a Presbyterian Woman Honorary Lifetime Membership Award.
