Mary Lapeyre Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 14 to Jul. 15, 2016.
Lapeyre Mary Christine Lapeyre, known to her friends as "Chrissy", died peacefully on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina, with her two sons by her side. She was 64 years old. Loving mother of Thomas Lapeyre Cowan and Clifton Lapeyre Cowan (Cate). Beloved sister of Jay Lapeyre (Sally), Chuck Lapeyre (Amy), Philip Lapeyre (Lisa), Amy Gui (Jeff), Mimi Orr (Randy), Monique McCleskey (Bob), Robert Lapeyre (Patti), and Andrew Lapeyre (Crickett). She was preceded in death by her parents, J. M. and Noreen Lapeyre. She is also survived by 22 nieces and nephews. Chrissy was born and raised in New Orleans. She attended The Academy of the Sacred Heart and continued her education at St. Genevieve's of the Pines in Asheville, North Carolina. In school, she forged many strong friendships that maintained over the course of her life. Some of her fondest memories from childhood were the years she spent in Denmark and Switzerland with her family. Her experiences in Europe at different points throughout her life contributed greatly to her worldly personality and ability to speak multiple languages fluently. Gardening was another one of Chrissy's many talents. She was a member of several gardening clubs, including the Garden Study Club. Chrissy was a strong advocate for individuals with learning differences and served as a committee member of the International Dyslexia Association. She had an amazing ability to recognize and appreciate many forms of intelligence. Chrissy always put the needs of others above her own. Her vibrant and nurturing personality will be greatly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at Metairie Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 9:30AM. In lieu of flowers, please keep Chrissy in mind as you donate to a charity of your choosing. To view and sign the guest book, visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.

I just wish I got to see Lapeyre family members more often. We had such a great time growing up on the same street together. Chrissy and I were the oldest child in large families, so naturally I was always "in love' with her, but my brother Randy was much more fun. But how could I ever forget her, and I surely hope to see her again one day.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of growing up on the same block with Chrissy and the beautiful Lapeyre family. My wife Maureen and I were in Italy and hope the Lapeyres know for sure that we'd have been there to be with you for Chrissy's service. I will never forget Chrissy and hope to see again her lovely smile one day in the eternal home of us all.

Tom Jr., Cliff, Jay, Chuck, and all the family,

Tom Cowan was kind enough to let us know that Chrissy had died peacefully with her family. We were out of the country when the funeral was held. We regret not being there to express our sentiments personally. Chrissy had many endearing qualities. However, one of her most salient was a disarming sweetness that made you feel quite comfortable when you were with her. Her illness came as a shock and her death way too young. We will miss her and are thinking of all of you.

There is a deafening silence in the world today. Chrissy was my loving friend. She knew that beauty was the essence of God, and supported the creative spirit with a vengeance. We shared joys and trials (and audio books and Pinterest, her passion!) and sorrows with each other. This is a sorrow she can't help me with. I love you, sweetie. The fragrance of fine French soap will always mean you are in the room. May legions of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Chrissy lit up a room with her inner brightness and beautiful heart. She was so genuine, and it simply shone through. My husband and I loved her enthusiasm and friendliness. To me, she retained the magical wonder and innocence and simple happiness that children have, not easy in today's world. Sincere condolences to all her family and friends, to my brother to whom she was a joy and much loved, and really to all the lucky people who knew her. I wish I had known her better. Chrissy will be remembered for the lovely person she was.

Chrissy was a lovely gentle woman. I remember visiting with her in the Lapeyre's kitchen often chatting with Mrs. Lapeyre , Amy , Inez and inevitably other Lapeyres would wonder in and out always such a joy to visit with. One just as attractive as another warm , engaging , interesting and always so so supportive. What a remarkable family. Xoxo
