Mary Sue McDuffie

Mary Sue McDuffie, 77, passed away on June 8, 2025, in Augusta, Georgia.

Born on April 30, 1948, in Durham, North Carolina, Mary Sue-known affectionately as Sue-was the eldest of five children. She graduated from Northern High School in Durham and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English from Duke University. Her love for language and storytelling was evident from an early age; she wrote prolifically throughout her youth and earned national recognition by winning a countrywide writing contest while still in high school.

Sue's professional journey began at Duke University, where she worked following her graduation. Her passion for the arts extended beyond the written word-she served as president of the Durham Theater Guild for several years, contributing to the cultural fabric of her hometown with dedication and creativity.

In the early 1980s, Sue relocated to Augusta, Georgia where she met her partner for life- Lee Courtney. She embarked on a new chapter as a court reporter. Her expertise and enthusiasm for her profession led her to travel across the country teaching continuing education courses to fellow court reporters. Through this work, she not only shared her knowledge but also inspired others in the field.

Sue was known as a bright and free spirit who cherished her family deeply. Though many of her loved ones preceded her in death-her parents James and Thelma Crumpler McDuffie; her sister Annie White, nephew Erick White and life partner E. Lee Courtney. She is survived by her sisters Patricia Bright and Betsy Daniels; brother Danny McDuffie; nieces Angela Hill and Erin Daniels; nephews Ted White and Bill Wiseman; step-daughter Vicki Abraham; and numerous great-nieces and nephews-her legacy lives on through those who knew and loved her.

The family plans to have a celebration of life at a later date
