CALIFORNIA, Md. — Mary Aherne Pumphrey, 84, formerly of Haverhill, died on Dec. 11, 2007 in California, Md.

Born and raised in Haverhill, she was the daughter of Frank and Mollie Aherne and grew up on 11th Avenue.

After graduating from Haverhill High School in the class of 1941, Mary worked at Haverhill Electric Company and then joined the WAVES serving at the Naval Hydrographic office in Suitland, Md. where she met her husband, Charles "Buddy" Pumphrey who died in 1989.

Mary was the mayor of District Heights, Md. for ten years while at the same time she was business manager of the Lowry Medical Center.

She is survived by daughters, Peggy Chaney of Clarksville, Tenn. and Ann Tennison of California, Md.; and son, Pat Pumphrey of Knotts Island, N.C. She was proud grandmother of Christine, Lon, Casey, Jason, and Charlie and great-grandma of Maggie, Molly, and Ryder. She is also survived by her sister, Fran Aherne of Canton, Ohio.

ARRANGEMENTS: Mary was buried in Cheltingham Military Cemetery.
