Mary Helen Villareal

Mary Helen Villareal, age 85, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, at Sunrise Senior Living in Gahanna, Ohio. She was born on August 13, 1939, to Michael and Helen (Hudock) Chamer.

Mary was raised in Youngstown and attending St. Mathias School. She had fond memories of growing up in the Lansingville neighborhood, including visits with the Hudock, Kuchalla, and Kish families. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. In 1960, she married Domingo Palino Villareal as he completed his medical residency at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Mary worked as a nurse in both Youngstown and Cleveland before she and Domingo moved to Canada in 1963. The couple later returned to reside in Warren, where they raised their four children.

Dedicated to her community, Mary was a devoted member of Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Church and St. Benedict Auxiliary. She volunteered with the Trumbull County Medical Society, American Red Cross, and St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, where she taught classes for the teen volunteer program. She was named a "Warren Woman Volunteer of the Year" in recognition of her community service.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Domingo. She is survived by her brother Michael Chamer (Rexie), and their daughters Rexie Michelle Gemesova (Matus) and Rechael Nagle (Tom), and their families. Mary was especially grateful for the affection of her nieces and nephews from the Villareal, Rosales, and Zarsosa families.

Mary leaves behind four children: Donna (Steve Grill), Jim (Catherine Schafer), David, and Brian. Her grandchildren Sarah Aileen Vater (Tommy), Erin Marie, Jonathan David, Paul Javier Grill (Leah Villareal), and a great-grandson, Shiloh.

Mary found great joy with her canine companions, Happy, Sparky, Tipper, Punkin, and Sisi. In memory of Mary, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

On Wednesday, August 13, a mass for Mary Helen Villareal will be offered at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Cortland. All are invited to gather at the church beginning at 10:00 am. A funeral mass will follow at 11:00 am.
