Mary WARD Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Aug. 30 to Sep. 1, 2017.

WARD, Mary Isabel
(nee: Sneddon)
May 8, 1927 – August 27, 2017
Mary passed away peacefully at the age of 90, in Edmonton. She is survived by her sons Dennis, Roger (Elaine) and George (Audrey), her daughter Leslie (Kirk), grandchildren Jordan (Liz), Suzanne (Darryl), Vic (Shar), Neil and Ian, and numerous nieces, nephews and relatives in Alberta, British Columbia, Britain, Australia, Hong Kong and the United States. Mary was predeceased by her husband Cedric (Brick) Ward in 1996, her parents Thomas and Janet Sneddon, and her brothers Sandy, David
and Bob.
Mary was born in Red Deer, and as a result of Rev. Sneddon's periodic transfers, lived in Haynes, Nordegg, Youngstown, Mayerthorpe and Bonnyville prior to attending the University of Alberta from 1945 to 1947. Her work on an Education degree was interrupted by marriage to teacher Cedric Ward on August 27, 1947. This led to a move back to Red Deer, and starting a family. The births of four children and transfers to Oyen and Sangudo did not deter Mary from pursuit of her degree, and she finally received a BEd. from the University of Alberta in 1965. More transfers followed - first to Ponoka, and finally to Edmonton in 1972, where Mary and Brick settled into his parents' old home on Summit Drive. Work as a school librarian inspired Mary to complete an MEd. in Elementary Education in 1975, and she finished her career at the Faculty of Education Library at the U. of A.
For over forty years Mary was deeply involved in the breeding of prize-winning Siamese and Oriental Shorthair cats, and the offspring from her Summit Mews Cattery are cherished by owners worldwide. She read voraciously, especially "whodunnits" and history, traveled extensively in her retirement, and made many friends in the Aquacise programs at Coronation and Grant McEwan. Mary moved into The Park at Rosedale in the fall of 2015, and resided there, making more friends, until her passing.
From her Lowland Scottish parents Mary inherited small stature, and belief in a loving God, social justice, plain speech and gardening. She was strong, stubborn and devoted to her family, treated her children firmly and fairly, and inspired them to seek higher education, and to do their best in all aspects of their lives. Mary was a lifelong member of the United Church of Canada, and her faith sustained her to the end.
The family are grateful to the residents and staff at Rosedale, the staff of Unit 5 East at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, and the members of St. Andrew's United Church for their care and concern during Mary's final illness.
A Memorial Service for Mary will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at St. Andrew's United Church, 9915 - 148 St., Edmonton. Interment will be in Red Deer, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Edmonton Humane Society, Meals on Wheels or the Bissell Centre.

Very sorry to hear of Marys passing. Our kitty Bita nea Snowdrop was one of hers & has brought us many wonderful years of companionship. I was about to contact her regarding the passing of one of our cats & found out that she too had passed. Very saddening.

We are so very sorry to hear Mary passed away! We do not receive the paper and with so many health issues that went on in our home last fall, lost track of time. We remember Mary as a very kind person who had lots to offer in life because of her spirit and dedication. We adopted 2 of her beautiful kittens in 2004 my beloved lynx point Siamese and in 2005 a white oriental. They are my pride and joy.
Our very late condolences to Mary's family!

Mary you will be so missed. I was privileged enough to help you care for your cats working at the Lynwood Vet. Your sparkling smile and the twinkle in your eyes never failed to make my day. From the nuts and bolts recipe (still have your recipe written by you) and our mutual love of reading, appointments with you and your cats left me with more than a client. I valued your friendship and will miss you terribly. Please kiss our beautiful Siamese boy Sam when you see him. Until we meet again. Love Suzanne Misiaszek

I met Mary through the cat clubs in Edmonton, when I first started showing Siamese then the Russian Blues. Mary was one of the most honest, kindest and common sense individual's I ever met. My condolences to the family.

My memories of Mary reach back a long time. She was a dear friend and a fellow breeder of cats. We had many happy times together on show weekends, including our regular Chinese dinner on the Saturday night. She remains vivid in my memory and a valued, dear friend. We shared a love of books. I loved Mary's dry sense of humour as well. My condolences to all family members.

My wife Sharon and I wish to extend sincere sympathies on the passing of Mary. She was an exceptional person with many talents, and an ability to relate to a wide variety of people. I fondly remember visiting the Ward family often in the big house on the hill in Sangudo. Throughout the years, both Sharon and I were colleagues with Roger and Elaine in Red Deer Public School District, and Audrey was also a colleague at the University of Alberta. Thank you for being my Grade 8 teacher, Mary, and I know that the cats in heaven will receive excellent care and attention. God Bless.

To All of the Ward Family,
Our sincere sympathy and condolences on the passing of your Mom from the Bob & Joy Ryder families.

When I first read the announcement a flood of memories about the "Sangudo Years" came back to me. I remember the many kindnesses, the generosity and friendship that your Mom and family gave to the community but mainly think of all of the special things she did for our family. (Think often of the special friendship and fun we had as kids).
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Sincerely Keith & Darlene Ryder, Stettler

So sorry to hear of Mary's passing. We have adopted three of her kittens over the years. All offspring off Captain Kirk. What joy they have brought to our lives. She always seemed to know which kittens would suit our family. What a wonderful woman!
