Mary Sidney Washington, beloved wife, mother, aunt, sister, grandmother, and devoted servant of Christ, peacefully departed this life on August 2, 2025. Born on July 10, 1948, she was the cherished daughter of the late Charles Albert Mundy and Willina Sidney.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved bonus son, Charles Washington III; brother, Charles Sidney; and two sisters, Florence Booker and Carol Woodford of Queens, New York.
She is survived by: her loving husband of 37 years, Charles Washington, Jr.; devoted children, Keith Ondre Tichenor ( Toya Taylor), and Toya Revelle Tichenor of Augusta, GA; bonus daughter , Lena Michelle Washington; her brother , Anthony Mundy; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
After attending the old historic Dunbar, Mary's professional journey was marked by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to service. She began her career in the hospitality industry, where she graced establishments such as Campbell House, Hyatt Regency, and Radisson Hotel with her outstanding customer service, sharp communication skills, and warm, welcoming demeanor. Her professionalism and compassion left a lasting impact on colleagues and guests alike.
Mary later brought her tireless work ethic to manufacturing roles at Square D and LexMark, where she became known for her early mornings and thoughtful gestures--like always ensuring a fresh pot of coffee was ready for her coworkers. After being laid off, she pursued her associate degree in Business Management from LLC College leading her to an administrative position at the First Church of God. She faithfully served there for over twenty years before retiring. Even in retirement, her commitment to ministry continued as she served as Pastor Zachary's secretary at Centerville Baptist Church and as the 2nd Vice President in the Consolidated Baptist Church and as the 2nd Vice President in the Consolidated Baptist District Educational Convention.
Mary attended Wesley Methodist Church and was a member of Centerville Missionary Baptist Church for over thirty years.
A woman of deep-rooted faith, Mary lived a life of humility, kindness, and unwavering love. Her infectious smile, gentle spirit, and sincere empathy made everyone around her feel seen and valued. She had a special gift for uplifting others, often with her signature warmth and humor. Her love for the Lord shone brightly through her involvement in the church and ministries like the Shoebox Ministry, which she held dear.
Mary was also a gifted cook whose homemade yeast rolls, corn pudding, fudge, and yellow cake with caramel icing were the highlight of many family and church gatherings. Food was her love language-an extension of her nurturing spirit.
Though Mary's physical presence is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in the hearts and lives she touched. She leaves behind a shining example of a life well-lived: one rooted in faith, kindness, generosity, and love. May we honor her memory by choosing compassion, spreading joy, and serving others just as she did.
As Mary worships in eternal glory, her light will continue to shine brightly in all of us. Rest in heavenly peace, dear Mary-you will always be loved and remembered.
