Maryann Ahlquist Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 13, 2025.
Maryann Frances Ahlquist (Thompson), a cherished mother, wife, sister, God mother, auntie, Meme, and friend, passed away on September 23, 2023, at Dover Hospital in New Hampshire after a sudden illness. She was 78 years old.

Born on January 16, 1945, in Boston, Massachusetts, Maryann was the youngest of four children to Walter J. and Anna R. Thompson. She took great pride in her diverse heritage, embracing her Portuguese roots from her mother and Irish and German ancestry from her father. A graduate of Framingham High School in 1963, Maryann embarked on an eventful journey through life that touched countless hearts along the way.

That same year, she married her first husband, Richard T. Staples, and began working in Cambridge in the federal liquor line's data department. Later relocating to New Hampshire, she became a small business owner, running a pizza and sub shop with dedication and care for many years. In 1974, following her divorce, Maryann courageously embraced a new chapter of independence and discovery.

While working at a children's clothing store during this time of transition, Maryann met Edwin Ahlquist. They began dating and married on Valentine's Day in 1976. Together they built a warm and loving home in Kittery, Maine-a place filled with laughter and unforgettable adventures. Maryann was known for her spontaneous "mystery rides," delighting friends and family with surprise outings that exemplified her joyful spirit.

Maryann had an enduring passion for antiquing, rummage sales, and jewelry. Her enthusiasm led to her beloved role as the "jewelry lady" at her church's Christmas fair-a tradition she upheld for over two decades by collecting and preparing jewelry donations to support the community she held dear.

In 1981 came one of Maryann's greatest joys: the surprise birth of her daughter Amy Louise Ahlquist. Devoted to Amy's upbringing, she poured herself into motherhood until Amy's passing in 1997. Despite this profound loss, Maryann found strength in helping others through support groups and acts of compassion that reflected her resilient heart.

Maryann was preceded in death by many loved ones who shaped her life: her parents; siblings Matthew J. Thompson, Walter J. Thompson, and Gloria L. Robillard; her first husband Richard T. Staples; her husband of 46 years Edwin Ahlquist; and her treasured daughter Amy L. Ahlquist.

She is survived by her stepdaughter as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will forever hold fond memories of their time with auntie or Meme. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched with kindness and generosity.

Maryann was laid to rest at Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery, Maine-reunited with Edwin, Amy, and her sister Gloria-where she will remain surrounded by love eternally.

Her life motto-"Live life to the fullest, laugh often, love lots" XX -perfectly encapsulates the vibrant energy she brought into the world every day. May those who knew Maryann find comfort in remembering her warmth and inspiration in carrying forward the joy she so freely shared with others.
