Meeraine "Meer" Louise (Werner) Cannon, 89, of Colorado Springs, passed away unexpectedly on January 31, 2023 from a catastrophic brain hemorrhage. Her daughter Jill and grandson Garrett were by her side. She was born December 11, 1933, in
Springfield, Missouri to Richard A. and Naomi (Norma) V. Werner. Meer lived in
Springfield, Missouri until she completed college. She graduated from Drury College where she was an active member of the Alpha Phi sorority and played violin in the Symphony. She then moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, to teach. While teaching Art there, she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Lee Cannon, a Science teacher at the same school. They were married in Wichita Falls on August 19, 1957. She taught Art in Texas for six years at the junior high level. She and Bob visited Colorado Springs for their honeymoon and loved the area so much they moved there in August of 1961. She taught fourth grade for three years in Widefield, Colorado. They moved to Ca?on City, Colorado, in 1969 after Bob became the Education Director at Estes Industries in Penrose. Meer took some time off to raise her two children, Douglas and Jill. She enjoyed playing violin in the Ca?on City Music Club, painting and drawing. She started substitute teaching in the Ca?on City school system and in 1976 she took over for an ill teacher and taught hundreds of students 3rd Grade at McKinley Elementary School until she retired in 1995. She was an amazing, kind, independent woman who continued to drive and live on her own and even texted and used (fought) the computer until her passing. She never stopped learning and educating herself. Meeraine was a very gifted artist, violinist and seamstress. During her high school and college years she designed and drew dresses and clothing for her parent's dress factory in Springfield. She enjoyed knitting, the theater and the arts, the symphony, reading, traveling, nature, and loved going "leaf peeping" in her beloved Colorado mountains in the fall. She was rarely without music playing in her home or car. She was an active member of the Ca?on City Music Club in the 1970's. She was a lifetime member of the Colorado Education Association and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In 2011 she moved back to Colorado Springs where she could enjoy a daily view of Pikes Peak, the mountain she loved so much. She was devoted to her Mother, Norma Werner, and cared for her until she passed away. And although her sister, Rosalie, was 13 years Meer's elder, she doted on Meer as a child and they were always extremely close. Meer enjoyed going to lunches, the symphony, theater, and movies with her friends. Not having a large family, she treasured hers deeply and loved visiting with her nephews and niece. She loved being a Grandmother to her two grandsons and often traveled to visit them and her daughter. She loved her children, Doug and Jill, beyond words. Perhaps the most difficult thing she ever endured were the losses of her husband and son at such young ages, yet she remained strong and her independence and faith carried her through the rest of her life. Meeraine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; son, Douglas; sister, Rosalie DeLange; and brother in law, William DeLange, Jr.. She is survived by her daughter, Jill Kathleen Joe,
Las Vegas, NV; grandsons S. Dillon Joe,
Cody, WY; and Garrett Lee Z. Joe,
Longmont, CO; nephews Richard "Rich" (Kay) DeLange, William "Bill" DeLange III, and Mark (Beth) DeLange, niece Jane (Mort) Shurtz, all of
Springfield, MO; many great nieces and nephews and dear friends. A memorial for Meeraine will be held Wednesday, February 22, 2023, 3:00 PM at Evergreen Funeral Home in Colorado Springs.
