Melvin Cooper Obituary
Biloxi
Melvin G. Cooper, a past president of The Magnolia Bar Association and prominent lawyer practicing in Biloxi, Mississippi, passed away on March 27, 2020, at the age of 76. He was well known as "a great guy" who carried himself in an esteemed manner.
A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Attorney Cooper received his Bachelor of Science degree from Alcorn A&M College and a Juris Doctorate degree from Howard University School of Law. Having served a long career in the field of law, Melvin was the first African American to be appointed Municipal Court Administrator for the City of Jackson. He also served as Municipal Court Judge for the City of Edwards, was a director for the State of Mississippi's Attorney General Medicaid Fraud and Control Unit, and served as an adjunct professor for Jackson State University's Criminal Justice Department.
Adhering to current "social distancing guidelines", private visitation for close family, friends, and colleagues will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Lakeover Funeral Home (1525 Beasley Road, Jackson, MS), followed by private burial.

I met atty Melvin Cooper at work while I was a paralegal at keesler AFB. He helped us defend a client at trial. Our client was acquitted. Mr Cooper was an awesome defense attorney. Miss him to this day. Our Lord our God is good. Amen

Melvin and I were more than friends, we were literally brothers.We talked at least three times a week for years. We were both class of 1962 at Lanier High School,roommates at Alcorn State University and members of the Alcorn A-Club. During the football games, Melvin suggested that I call him to keep him updated on what was happening throughout the game. We were so close that my daughters called him "daddy coop." I am going to miss you "brother".

I am saddened deeply by the passing of this dear friend of many decades. Melvin and I were the same age and we had similar law practices. We bonded a long time ago and that bond never faltered. My Condolences to Mr Cooper and family.He was always pleasant and cordial whenever I had to assist him at my Post Office.I did not know that he was a star basketball player for Alcorn College until I assisted him with 50 or more programs about his exploits that he was sending out!
