I remember when I was probably five years old, and Dad had a plastic blue canoe, and he would take me fishing in the lakes and streams of New Hampshire. He taught me to respect, and LOVE, the quiet beauty of nature. We live in an eternal springtime, in my memory. He caught a chain pickerel as long as I was tall. He showed me how it was struggling to breathe, out of the water. He asked "should we let it go?" and I said YES! He gently let the beautiful fish swim away, and told me how it would have more babies just like it, and this would always be a good place to fish.
It was a state record, and he knew it. I watched him release more than one.
He was a GOOD father to me, and I will always remember the lessons of those days, in the blue canoe.
