To Ann, Debby, and other members of the family, our condolences. We have known Murray well since his coming to Athens and we consider him a friend, an outstanding researcher and teacher, and a wonderful "character". We will miss him. Bern and Gilles Allard, Athens, GA.

Murray was a great friend and teacher to students from pre-school through post-doctoral studies. His wit and wisdom will be greatly missed by those who knew him and by many who did not. My sincere condolences to Ann and daughters (as I knew them) Debbie, Darcy, Dana and Dawn.

Professor Murray Blum was a brilliant, kind, interesting gentleman who always wore a smile. As a member of my PhD thesis committee and friend to my advisor, he certainly had a profound impact on my life. Numerous lives were enriched who were fortunate to know Dr. Blum. He will truly be missed by family, friends and the scientific community.

We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Dr. Blum, our beloved, respected Professor, and a friend. Our thoughts are with Mrs. Blum and the family. I (Solang) knew Dr. Blum at LSU and then with Beling at the UGa. We had fond memories of his kind friendship and his unique humor. We all shall miss him.

What a great loss to the scientific community. His work inspired many of us to pursue a career in chemical ecology. Murray was a great friend and mentor to my late Ph.D. advisor Sean Duffey.

I met Dr. Blum for one too brief summer in 1968. I was assisting one of his PhD candidates in research. I found him one of the most engaging and welcoming people I have ever known. I was a lowly sophomore at UGA at the time, but there were no barriers to entering the world of his supreme humor, humanity and intelligence. Having contact with him helped me grow into, I believe, a more compassionate and caring physician.

This is indeed very sad news. A towering pioneer in our field. Greatly admired in the UK, not least by Miriam Rothschild herself. In fact, I was charged with tracking down Murray for an interaction just prior to Miriam's own demise. Not only a great influence on my early work, particularly on bees, but on my kids becoming interesting people and taking up science - but that's another story.

I greatly miss Murray. He was warm, loving, full of life, funny, brilliant, down-to-earth, and iconoclastic. He was a great Dad to Dawn and a great father-in-law to me. I am glad we were good friends for 30 years. Fred Lewis, Austin, Texas

Condolences and best wishes to Ann and the rest of Murray's family. I didn't know him very well -- more by reputation then personally -- but well enough to know the world is diminished by his passing.

Murray was an energetic and broadly based biologist. His contributions to entomology and chemical ecology were enormous, and he was a staunch supporter of young investigators entering the science. I will miss him dearly.

Ann and family, my heart has tears for Murray and you. He was an icon. I have wonderful memories of him from my time at Texas A & M and his help to me in my bark beetle behavioral chemical research. Two stories: I was working on bark beetle compounds and Murray brought some stereo isomers to me that had been synthesized in Japan by Kenji Mori. I cherish that he agreed to be a co-author on the paper we produced from that research. Second story: I found an amber pendant for my wife Alice. It had an ant in it. Murray wanted to drill the pendant for DNA to determine the species. We never got to it. But a cool story and memory.

While at A & M for some 18 years I worked with Wayne Berisford at UGA and often had the fun of seeing and being with Murray. All of us who had the pleasure and honor of knowing him are enriched with many memories. He touched so many lives and goes on because of it. Thanks Murray!

I'm sorry to learn of Murray Blum's passing. As others have said, he was an original, and they broke the mold after he was here. During my graduate days at UGA I both learned from what he taught and enjoyed the way he taught it. He won't be forgotten.

Deepest Sympathy in your time of grief. I was saddened to read of Murray's passing. I used to work at the University of Georgia's Computer Center when I encountered Murray. He was a great friend and lover of life. I remember him fondly and we used to talk about his love of "The Three Stooges" among other things. This one is for you Murray! NYUK, NYUK, NYUK.
