Nancy Taylor Benson May 12, 1970 - August 13, 2016
Nancy Taylor Benson, 46, of Fairfax, Virginia passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2016. Nancy was a talented freelance artist and a beautiful presence both inside and out. Nancy’s glowing smile radiated love and kindness to her cherished children and family.
Nancy was a multi-faceted person of many interests motivated by an insatiable curiosity and a love of learning. She graduated from the Holton-Arms School in 1988 and from Colgate University in 1992 with a degree in Art History. She pursued graduate studies in art at George Mason University with the goal of reaching out to disadvantaged youth, wanting to “help tidy up inner lives so everyone’s outer lives can be clean, sparkly, beautiful and flowy.” In addition to her lifelong artistic practice, and her talented freelance work in art, Nancy was a yoga teacher. As a spiritual seeker and practitioner, Nancy had a keen interest in ancient philosophies and belief systems. Nancy’s philosophy in life was “to live in every moment and just be.”
Nancy had a deep affinity and love of nature, and derived much joy in hiking the local woods with her family dogs. Nancy’s sensitivity to others and kindness was always on display in her encouraging presence and ready smile. She will be dearly missed by all those who loved her, and who derived so much joy and delight from her.
She is survived by her children, Lucy Benson Clarke, and Thomas Benson Clarke; her mother, Susan Benson; her sister, Tracy Adams Benson and her brother, James William Benson, Jr.; her former husband David Clarke and her best friend, Steve Scholl. Her beloved memory will be cherished by many more.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, August 19 at Demaine Funeral Home in Fairfax with remarks being given at 7pm.

I am so saddened to learn that Nancy has passed away. Nancy and I were friends in elementary school, participating in girl scouts and hanging around. She could make me laugh so hard that I cried. In addition to having a quick sense of humor, Nancy was incredibly creative and always had a unique perspective. I admired her and thought that she was one of the truly all-around great people in our world. I'm glad that my childhood experiences were influenced by Nancy's friendship.

It's been almost a year since we lost Nancy, and I still think about her so often. She has left such a void in our universe that can never be filled. I met her 7 years ago, when I was 15 years old. I can say without a doubt that I have never and, likely, will never met a more creative, inspiring, and simply beautiful soul. She came into my life at such a pivotal time and really left her mark...
It breaks my heart but I also can't help but smile when I find a little match box she decorated, a handmade card, a simple bookmark she made. She was the coolest woman I've ever known. I hope she found her peace.

Dear Family,
We have only just today learned of Nancy's very untimely death. We are shocked and very saddened - for her and for all of you! Please know that we will always remember Nancy as she has been so aptly described, and will also always cherish the darling little handmade Christmas card she sent us many years ago. She was a very talented woman in so many ways. Take care of Lucy and Tom - and yourselves.
With love from Tockey and Bill

I cannot tell you how saddened I am to hear of Nancy's passing. Our paths continuously crossed since 1998 when we both started at UMUC together, to just these past years at elementary school when our kids ended up being in the same class. It was always are wonderful joy to see her again. To Nancy's family: I am sending my thoughts and support to you. I am so sorry. Adrienne Sullivan

We were so lucky to have Nancy helping us with costumes for our performers at various special events. Everyone commented on how helpful and friendly she was, a true pleasure to be around. I can't even begin to express how much we will miss her!

Our entire family felt Nancy's light through her friendship (and childhood shenanigans) with my sister, Emily. Her light started there but continued through the whole family each time she came to visit.
It would be an incredible gift to her children, her mother and others she loved to send a letter when it is least expected that captures a favorite memory of her and how she specifically brought light to our lives.
Then, perhaps, Nancy Benson's light will outshine the heartache we feel as life unfolds without her.
Amazing Peace,
