NANCY B. FIRESTONE

Nancy Firestone passed away at home on October 3, 2022, surrounded by family.

Mate, mother, mentor, teacher, sister, daughter, friend – she blazed so brightly – bringing insight, intellect, kindness, compassion, wit and grace to every room she ever entered.

Nancy was named to the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in 1998 after an exemplary 20+ year career with the federal government. Nancy began work with the DOJ in 1977 after receiving her B.A. from Washington University and her J.D. (with honors) from the University of Missouri - Kansas City Law School. Nancy quickly rose through the ranks ultimately serving as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of DOJ from 1995-1998, as a Judge on EPA's Appeals Board from 1992-1995 and as Associate Deputy Administrator of EPA from 1989-1992.

A born teacher she inspired and piqued curiosity in her enthralled fans no matter how complex or mundane the topic and was conversant in everything from quarks to religion to Broadway hits.

Nancy loved and embraced all children (who naturally gravitated to her sweet and gentle laugh) and loved sparking and encouraging their curiosity.

Daughter Amanda Firestone DuVall was her pride, joy and raison d'etre.

A lover, and devoted patron, of the arts – including all the Gustavs: Mahler, Klimt and Holst – she was inspired by all the "creatives" and loved sharing these experiences with others. She traveled the world twice over with beloved friends, always welcomed and embraced newcomers and was always game to tackle a discussion of complex and challenging topics bringing a fresh, new perspective to the table. A gifted teacher (an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University Law Center for more than 35 years) – she loved engaging, guiding and debating inquisitive minds on complex topics ranging from politics to the Constitution to the bible to scientific development, with nary a bruised ego.

Having a passion for education and the arts Nancy enthusiastically served on the Board of the VA Foundation for Community College Education and the Theatre J Council.

Cherishing her memory are her daughter Amanda Firestone Duvall (Christopher), her spouse and love of 38 years (Patricia Payne), her sister Susan Portnoy (Michael) and many extraordinary friends.

A private service for family and invited friends was held at King David; a larger Celebration of Nancy's life will take place at a later date for all who knew and loved Nancy.

Nancy leaves a legacy of love, kindness, generosity, compassion and excellence -- which her family and friends will always strive to preserve.

I knew Nancy through my parents, Esther and Simon Adler, who were friends with her parents in Plainview , N.Y. She was a charming and helpful host when I visited Washington with my son, around 2000. My sincere condolences to Patricia, Amanda and Susan. Zehra Greenleaf, Eugene,OR

Judge Firestone was a wonderful mentor to me and many fellow WashU alumni during her time on the court. Spending my spring break in her chambers my sophomore year of college was my first exposure to the judicial system, and I couldn't have known then that I would ultimately go to law school and end up clerking in the very same building, albeit on a different court--in part, thanks to her kind words on my behalf. I always appreciated her willingness to welcome me back to her chambers any time I was in DC and wish I had had the opportunity to see her in person once I moved to DC permanently, which was sadly foreclosed by the pandemic. May she rest in peace and her legacy live on.
