Patricia Atwater Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 3, 2008.
ATWATER, PATRICIA A. (Patsy) Nov. 26, 1927 to Jan. 30, 2008
Born Patricia Anne Hogan in San Diego, California to parents Edgar Whiteside Hogan and Ruth Josephine Bacon Hogan. Patricia was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and true friend to many. She was the granddaughter of former San Diego Mayor (1921-1927), John Lord Bacon. A woman of pure grace and beauty, and love of family, and for all mankind. She graduated from Hoover High School in 1945, in San Diego, California. A true pioneer for women in accounting, she obtained her accounting degree from San Diego State University in 1961 while raising four children, with the complete support of her husband, Warren (who was a great cook). Her grandson, Casey Atwater is following in her footsteps. She was a member of the fraternal organization, Beta Alpha Psi. She was also a member of the woman's rowing organization, ZLAC Rowing Club (est. 1892 in San Diego) from the 1940's to 2007. She retired in 1989, and then began a new career of traveling throughout the United States, and the world, with great friends and new friends made on her journeys. She gave generously to many causes to include the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy, and the San Diego Zoo. She grew up worshiping at St. Paul 's Episcopal Church in San Diego (now the Archdiocese of San Diego). She was preceded in death by her husband Warren Mills Atwater in 1987, and her parents. She is survived by her sister Virginia Hogan Warner, her children, Denise Manewal (Steve) of Warrenton, Oregon, Nancy Spellman (Tim) of Concord, California, Martha Keith (Dale) of Murrieta, California, and David Atwater (Donna) of San Diego, California. Her grandchildren, Rebecca Lemmo, Katherine Lemmo, Sara Lemmo, Mary Spellman, Casey Atwater, Audrey Atwater. Her great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Madeline, Arthur, and Lincoln. The family and her friends will always be grateful for the gifts she has given all of us; she was truly one of the most amazing women to walk this earth, and she will be missed so much by everyone. She was truly graced by her son, David and her daughter-in-law, Donna (and their children Casey and Audrey) to be living close, and helping her throughout the years, and her neighbors next door, Dave and Cecilia Barry, her friends Ivan and Anna Peterson, Jonathan Barber, and Tommy Lightfoot Garrett, but especially her family who stayed with her during her final hours. It is with much thanks, love, and praise for her caregivers Linda and Willie, and Sharp Hospice Care of La Mesa. Pursuant to Patricia's wishes, there will be no memorial service, but donations in celebration of her life may be given to Sharp Hospice Care at 8881 Fletcher Parkway #310, La Mesa, CA, 91942, or UCSD Alzheimer's Research at 8950 Villa La Jolla Dr., Ste. C129 La Jolla, CA.92037.Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com

Pat was a beautiful and wonderful woman, brilliant, sweet, caring and lovely, a dear, dear friend. And she was also a superb achiever, earning her CPA certificate at a time when few women even thought of trying, and later going on to be the Chief Financial Officer a fair sized manufacturing company. It seems we've known Pat for a lifetime instead of just over 48 years. Once we all retired we spent years traveling the world together as a happy and adventuresome family. She'll always have a place in our hearts and minds! With love,

MY GRANDMA WAS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING PEOPLE I HAVE AND WILL EVER MEET. SHE FACED CHALLENGES HEAD ON AND WAS NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK HER MIND. SHE TRAVELED ALL OVER THE WORLD AND HAD A WONDERFUL LIFE. I LOVE HER AND WILL MISS EVERYTHING ABOUT HER.

Pat and my mother, Betty Nesvold, were neighbors and enrolled in college, trading days in school so the other could take care of the kids when attending classes. Our families were very close during these times. Pat, of course, went on to her successfull CPA carreer. My mom eventually got her PHD and taught at SDSU. Her career got started because two friends got together to help each other. They were both an inspiration to me and all of our families. Pat was a trail blazer.

Pat was the loveliest person I ever met. She accepted me into her heart and family from day one. She always spoke lovingly of me and to me. I will miss her so much. I hope all of her children, especially Nancy know what a special lady you had in your lives all of these years. Pat, when I get to heaven, don't forget, you promised I could be on your Front Porch! Here's to you, Pat and your beautiful kids. Love, Tommy
