Patrick Maguire Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2024.
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Patrick Joseph Maguire of New Milford, CT, on September 22, 2024. Renowned bagpiper, Patrick passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Danbury Hospital, after a valiant, near 3-year, battle with cancer.

Patrick is predeceased by his brother Michael J. Maguire (New Fairfield) and son Patrick T. Maguire (New Milford). He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary, and their children Brendan (Marie Buzzeo) of New Milford, Colleen (David Ibsen) of NYC, and Erin of New Milford, grandchildren Ashley and Patrick H., and two Goddaughters Patricia Maguire (NC) and Ann Jennings (Co. Mayo, Ireland). He is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews in NY, NC, Ireland, Scotland and England.

Born in The Bronx on November 14, 1942, to loving parents Patrick Francis and Johanna Maguire (Sullivan), Patrick cherished his Bronx-born Irish American roots and was deeply proud of his heritage. From a young age, Patrick religiously attended Irish cultural events and St. Patrick Day Parades, which fueled his love of music, particularly Irish songs, ballads, and bagpipe tunes. He was immediately drawn to the sound and beauty of the pipes, and the traditions and regalia of the uniform and band. He soon began taking lessons, igniting what was to become a life-long passion that he loved to share with others, including many students who will carry on his love for Irish music and traditions.

Patrick was a founding member of the Clan Na Vale Pipe Band in New Jersey (Early 1970s) and the Celtic Cross Pipe and Drums (CCPD) in Danbury (1990). He was generous with his time and played at countless town ceremonies and events, soon becoming known as the "New Milford Town Piper." Patrick's pipes, smile and Irish eyes, were sought by many outside of New Milford as well, and his rendition of "Amazing Grace" brought comfort to many. He held a special affection for playing for his family in Ireland, and an unwavering dedication for honoring our veterans and service members, whom he deeply respected.

Patrick spent 33 years at the Union Carbide Corporation, working at their Park Avenue headquarters in NYC. When Carbide relocated to Danbury, he moved his young family to New Milford in 1978. After retirement, Patrick was asked to join Mayor Art Peitler's administration, where he enjoyed using his knowledge of business and work experience to serve the local community.

Patrick was an active member of several organizations, including St. Francis Xavier Church, where he served on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister, as well as the New Milford Republican Town Committee, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the New Milford 911 Memorial Maintenance Committee. He deeply valued his friendships with fellow members of Knights of Columbus Council #40.

Patrick was asked to be an Honorary Member of Water Witch Hose Co. No. 2 and served as the department's piper for the last 22 years. He is also an Honorary Member of the New Milford Police Department Honor Guard. In 2018, he was recognized as New Milford's Irishman of the Year, and alongside his wife Mary, they were crowned King and Queen of the 2013 Village Fair Days.

Patrick was known for his twinkling eyes, infectious smile, and unwavering love for his family, community, and country. He had a remarkable ability to brighten any gathering, easily striking up conversations and forming connections with everyone there.

Patrick's greatest love was for his wife, Mary. For over 59 devoted years, he cherished her deeply. In his final days, he held her gaze and repeatedly expressed his love for her.

As a father, he was a source of pride and inspiration, leaving a legacy of kindness, humor, and generosity. His love and forgiveness had no boundaries.

Patrick viewed the members of the CCPD as family. For over 34 years, they shared countless experiences-from weekly practices and parades to celebrating birthdays and holidays. Like any family, they faced loss and supported one another through it all. Their talents went beyond pipes and drums; they were also skilled doctors, storytellers, educators, jokesters, singers, and dancers. In Patrick's words, "they are simply the best!"

A true force of nature, Patrick brought joy and warmth to everyone around him. His loss is immeasurable, but the love, laughter, and precious memories he created will forever remain in all our hearts. His spirit and passion for life touched us all. While nothing can replace his smile, laugh, and generous heart, we find comfort in knowing that his love will always be with us.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Christopher Wolfgang and his team at NYU Langone Medical Center, as well as to the dedicated staff at New Milford and Danbury Hospitals and the Diebold Family Cancer Center. We are especially thankful for the love, care and respect provided by all the nurses during this time.

Both calling hours and a mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Church, 26 Chestnut Land Road, New Milford, CT. Calling hours are Friday, September 27 from 4pm to 7pm, and the mass is Saturday, September 28 at 11am. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery at 80-86 Fort Hill Rd, New Milford.

My heart goes out to you, Mary, Colleen, Brendan & Erin. I have such wonderful memories of Pat - always such a cheery person with a warm smile and laugh. My Mom, Carol, adored him since they went to grade school together and remained friends for 60+ years. So many good times in Meadowbrook - hope you'll cherish the memories as much as I do! He also was so amazing to offer to play his bagpipes at all of the Madden departures to heaven - including Dennis, Carol & Sean. We were all blessed to know him! XOXO, Tracey Madden

I´m so sorry for your loss. What a kind and generous man Pat was. The bagpipes were always a treat but so was when he would be Santa for the children at Holy Infant Nursery school. May God bless you and keep you until you are together again.

MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY to you all. Pat was a gem! In 1992 my husband & I were looking for a bag piper to play at our wedding in my hometown of Fairfield...he was the guy!!! A blessing came in the years following. In 1998 we moved to New Milford and had the great pleasure of seeing him play the pipes in many parades...on the green etc! I never missed an opportunity to say hello to that kind & charming man

Pat was a natural born story teller, his laughter and joy was in abundance. His bagpipes had their own travel passport. You meet Pat, and you know the bagpipes were close by. Most of all, Pat was a family man who dearly loved his family. My deepest condolences to Josie, Brendan & Mia, Colleen and David and Erin. Pat/your dad is with Patrick, watching over you all and playing the bagpipes. Lots of love and prayers to you all. Fiona, John, Niamh, Neil & Ronan. Galway, Ireland.
