Patrick MAHONEY Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Jun. 12 to Jun. 13, 2012.
MAHONEY, Patrick Morgan
PC, QC, BA, LL.B.
Proud son of pioneers, Pat passed away June 8, 2012. His father, Paul, was born at Howard, Dakota Territory; his mother, Tracy, nee Patrick, at Calgary, NWT. Born at Winnipeg January 20, 1929, Pat was the eldest and last surviving of their children, predeceased by brothers, Douglas and Richard and sister, Carole Manson. He is survived by his wife Mary, sons Michael and Patrick, daughters Sheila and D'Arcy, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His early education disrupted by polio contracted at six, he finished school in Calgary and, financed by scholarships and summer jobs, attended the University of Alberta, '50 BA, '51 LL.B., Gold Key Society, Delta Upsilon. General counsel to Calgary based Standard Holdings Group controlled by Red Dutton and Reg Jennings, 1954-1968. Keenly interested, if unable to participate, in sports, Pat had been president of interfaculty hockey and manager of the Golden Bears hockey team at U of A and became corporate secretary of the Stampeder Football Club on its reorganization in 1956. He was elected a director and executive VP in 1960. Pat represented the Stampeders throughout the evolution of Canadian professional football from independent eastern and western leagues that competed only in the Grey Cup Game to today's CFL. He was CFL president in 1966 and a coauthor of its Players' Pension Plan. Pat was Stampeders' president in 1968 when elected MP for Calgary South. He was Minister of State (Finance) when he lost his seat in 1972. Judge of Federal and Court Martial Appeal Courts of Canada, 1973-1994; Chief Justice Court Martial Appeal Court, 1977-1994. Called to the Bar of United States Court of Military Appeals. Retired prematurely due to impact of post-polio syndrome. Would happily have yielded his distinction as "The Last Liberal MP from Calgary" in his lifetime. There will be no service at his specific request. If desired, memorial gifts to Doctors Without Borders, 720 Spadina Avenue, Suite 402, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 2T9, or charity of your choice would be appreciated.

As a childhood neighbour, I remember Pat as a stern but loving and generous father. Visits often entailed bouts of merciless tickling to which I looked forward immensely.

In later years several great trips to the Gatineau (I think that's where it was) cabin at the lake are still vivid in my mind, as well as wonderful meals (entirely wasted on me at the time) at the house in Rockcliffe Park.

I regret having not visited again to see him.

My condolences to Mary, Michael and the rest of the family.

Great memories of Pat as I was fortunate to share several years as brothers in Delta Upsilon, as well as members of the Gold Key Club. It was a privilege to know him, and rewarding to follow his great success in law and as a fine Judge. His great humanism as well as his wonderful humour will be sorely missed.
Deepest sympathy to Mary and family.

All Blessings to "The Judge". We will always treasure the Coltrin Place 'hood memories; Mahoneys, McKennas and Morrisons; our parents, our pets and our peaceful cul de sac. Remembering and appreciating Mr. Mahoney's intelligence, humor and deep sensitivity. Love and best wishes, Elizabeth and Bill Overall

Uncle Pat, you will be missed. I remember the days in Calgary when we visited you all. I remember those great family get-togethers, and how much fun we all had.

You were a respected man, and each year I would meet someone that knew of you, or had read one of your decisions. I was always proud to say that you were my Uncle.

I enjoyed our time together, and that time we (you, Karen & I) had lunch in the Cove. It was so nice seeing you, however I'm sorry to say I was never a Stampeder fan. ;o)

I will miss you, but I know that you are now at peace.

I have many fond memories of sharing a drink and pleasant conversation with Pat and Jerry Yanover at the National Press Club. Pat's insight, wit and friendship will be missed. My condolences to his family.
