Survived by wife, Kathleen; children, Ann, Emily, and John; parents, Melvin and Dorothy; brothers, William and Thomas (Catherine); sisters Janice, Mary, and Barbara (Robert) Kenutis; as well as many nieces and nephews. After graduation, Paul worked as Special Assistant Attorney General, State of Minnesota, and then Legal Counsel for H.B. Fuller Company, before starting his own law practice in 1997. His wonderful laughter could be heard from all corners of the world! Paul's presence was always valued, he had such a love for the Marines and was so very supportive! Paul always made sure to talk to everyone and he was so very loved, respected and caring.... I miss him.

Paul made me feel very special and always recognized my reason for being connected with the Marines....

With my father being gone since 2016... I know the pain of losing a loved one never goes away, but I hope knowing how many people loved him gives you a sense of comfort....

Paul would be glad to know that fundraising efforts for the Solomon Islands Tulagi School, termed “Paul's Dream,” are going very well. We should have a project manager hired in January with construction starting this spring. Thank you Paul, family, and friends for motivating us and for the financial help.

I wanted to let you know how saddened I was by the news of Paul's passing. He helped me get through an awful time after my dad's passing. He was my "light at the end of the tunnel" as they say. I was floundering with the Supplemental Needs Trust my dad had set up for my sibbling (of which I am the trustee) and had no idea how to proceed. Just by chance I came upon the website and called. Paul not only called me back and set me straight on handling the trust, we had a wonderful conversation about hockey, Marines(which my father had been), ice fishing etc. He brightened my day and my spirit! He renewed my faith in humanity that day.

I only recently learned of Paul's passing and want to extend my sincerest condolescences to his family. I knew him from GAC and was a client of his in recent years. He was my friend and such a generous, caring, compassionate person who will be missed by many.

January 25, 2012

Paul was my friend at Gustavus. I was a Tau Mu Tau pledge, and he was my assigned brother. Paul was so good and kind, that he simply could not follow through with anything stern or demanding (as he was supposed to do as a pledge master) but just laughed. He became my husband's friend through hockey before we moved to Jackson Hole. and is loved deeply. We send our love to his family (whom he adored.) What a good, good man. Joy and Dick Lundeen

Paul contacted me a number of times to purchase autographed copies of the book “The Twins Platoon”, which I had written. He told me he liked the book a lot and he wanted to give them as gifts to others. From time to time, over the last five years, we would meet and he would tell me what I needed to know to personalize each gift for the recipient. Mostly, he gave books to those who served in the military as a way of thanking them for their service to our country. On a couple of occasions, I even received autographed copies of military books personalized to me by the authors, compliments of Paul. Truly, Paul was one of the most sincere and caring persons I have had the privilege to meet. He told me a number of times “If you know of someone who needs an attorney, but can't afford one.” refer them to me. I'll help them for free.” When I heard of Paul's passing it really hit home that I had just lost a friend. I wish to express my sincere condolences to Paul's family.

To the Heckt family. My deepest condolences for your loss. Paul's friends in Thunder Bay remember an engaging and thoughtful friend, and a tireless recorder of the chronicles of Barristers' Cup hockey. His smiling face in the dressing room, microphone in hand, win or lose, was always a welcome sight. He will be missed, and always remembered.

Kathy & family,

I am one of the players who has been around for most, but not quite all, of the thirty years of Monday night hockey. Like the rest of "the gang," I was stunned to hear of Paul's passing last Monday.

I can't imagine the loss to the family of such a vital person at such a young age. But to us, Paul was someone who thanklessly organized our weekly outing for exerecise and camraderie week after week, year after year, asking nothing in return. And managed to keep the group cohesive with just the right amount of story telling that allowed us to get to know each other eventually, if not always right away. He was a great guy and a colorful character that will be truly missed by all of us.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I knew Paul at GAC and as an OK brother to my sorority. We had recently reconnected on Facebook and it was great fun to catch up! I was so shocked and sad to hear of your loss. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. Heaven has gained an engaging and entertaining soul.

To the family of Paul Heckt.

I was another of Paul's Frat Brothers at GAC. His folks allowed me to spend January 1972 at their home as I observed at Armstrong High School. Great memories of Paul and may the Christ of Christmas bring comfort to each of you in your loss.

What a great loss! Hecktor was indeed, Mr. OK. He was a friend and a role model. Hecktor went out of his way to help and befriend others. I still smile and laugh when I think of all we went through back at GAC. So many stories and memories. Happy trails on whatever journey awaits you. Ken

December 23, 2011

I am so sad to hear about the loss of my friend and fraternity brother Hecktor (I was two years senior to him at GAC). In recent years, through the wonders of internet, facebook, email and all, we had gotten "back together". Hecktor had a huge interest in the military, military history, and in the experiences of those of us from Gustavus who ended up flying in the military. My experience in that field led to a huge coincidence via my marriage. It turned out, after checking his Dad's records and my father-in-law's war diary that my father-in-law (Judson Davis; a Navy pilot) actually flew attack missions against the Japanese positions in support of the Marine Raiders that Hecktor's dad, Melvin, was fighting with on the ground. As I recall, it was the Okinawa campaign in the Spring of 1945. It turned out that the dates and places (caves/towns) were exact matches between Melvin's ground battles and Jud's air strikes as recorded in their diaries. Amazing. Anyway, I will greatly miss our conversations about not only these things, but on so many other subjects. He was a great, caring man who will be missed by many. We were of one mind. Godspeed, Hecktor.

December 23, 2011

Mel,

Judy and I were SO sorry to learn of Paul's passing. He was a fine young man and everyone in the USMRA will miss him.

I know he really admired you, following in your footsteps with the law and with the Marine Raiders.

Whenever I mentioned you to him, you could tell, always, how proud he was of
you and how much he (to use a term we guys don't use very often) really loved you and how very proud he was to be Mel Heckt's son.

I know, because of his love for and loyalty to you, this is a particularly difficult time for you, but, please know many people, including Judy and me, are thinking of and praying for you.

With our deepest sympathy,
Bob

Dear Heckt Family,
We are just shocked to hear about the sudden death of such a wonderful guy. He had a story for everything! A proud and loyal American, above all, he will be remembered as a man who clearly loved his family. John, he was so proud of you; he loved sharing his passion for the sport of hockey with you. We never had to ask twice for him to volunteer to help out - in today's world, that speaks volumes to his character. We are so sorry we didn't know sooner. Our prayers are with you, especially during the Christmas season.

Dad,

We'll always love you, just like you always loved us. You were the best Dad anyone could ask for. We always knew how great of a person you were, but the outreach of so many people in these past few days has made us truly understand the impact you had on this world. We will all follow in your footsteps.

Mel and to the entire Heckt family

I was extremely sadden to hear of Paul passing. I feel like a great friend and fellow hockey player and even coach for my hockey playing was taken!

We 1st met at Marine Corps League Meeting 3 years ago and told Paul I was looking for a hockey team to play for..and he responded i have a team!!! "We need another Marine on the team" to compliment Joe Adrian (another Marine Veteran)on the Augsburg Attorney General League Then, he asked me "how good I was"...I said Marine Corps GREAT LOL..actually I sucked and he and the team taught me a plethora of great hockey skills!

Ever since starting play 3 years ago..He's was a great spark to the evenings game!! Even Giving me the game puck from my HAT TRICK 3 weeks ago and dressed up and including Paul's signture additional mark-ups on puck!

His involvment with Marine Corps Cordinating Councel of Minnesota, Marine Raiders, Metro Marines and Marine Corps League events and his passion on the Marine Corps History and even current issues on the Marine Corps. I loved the Stories I shared with him on my tour while I was in active duty!

His infectious laugh and LONG STORY telling while standing with his arms crossed holding his days work or file folders to his chest LOL!!

I feel he's up there consulting the Marines Who are guarding the gates of Heaven... Stand Tall Paul and Skate on!!

I will miss you and as well the friends family of who crossed paths with!

We will miss you Paul. You always made us laugh and enjoy the BAA hockey years. You saw the potential in the kids and highlighted each of their unique skills in the videos you took, and the great nick names you gave them. We also enjoyed a continued friendship and love for hockey long after the kids had left BAA.

I met Paul while we were employed by HB Fuller Company where he worked as a corporate lawyer. We got to know each other and became good friends over the years. Besides playing hockey together at Augsburg, we also hunted, fished, golfed, etc. His nickname of "Paul Henslayer" came about during one of the hunting events in Iowa. A lot of time was spent discussing all kinds of subjects over lunch or coffee - sometimes with a beer in hand.
Paul also was involved with the Garvey family in various family functions, including weddings and funerals - and he dealt with probate issues for various family members.
Paul was a very intelligent man with a work ethic second to none. He was also one of the most loyal, caring and honest people I have had the honor of knowing.
I am stunned by his passing and will miss his friendship.

December 22, 2011

I have only known Paul for a year and a half. However the stories that we shared made me feel like I've known him for years. Paul is such a lovable guy with a deep passion for helping people. Paul will be greatly missed.

Paul, you knew how to have fun in any situation and had a unique talent for drawing all present into the fun with you. I can still hear your energized, jovial voice and infectious laughter in my mind like you were right here. Thanks Paul for being so inclusive in sharing all the joy that you emanated. You will be missed. My deepest sympathy and kindest regards to all who had the distinguished privilege of knowing you.

My deepest sympathies to Paul's family. My association with Paul was limited to the annual Barrister's Cup, but even with those short visits it was clear to me that Paul had a zest for life and enjoyed the companionship of other lawyers who loved the game of hockey. His wit and humor will surely be missed. May God's grace give you peace in this difficult time.

I first got to know Paul as "Hecktor" the older brother of my good friend Bill about 30 years ago. We played hockey together on Sunday nights at Augsburg back then in one of the first old goat hockey leagues that Paul organized. His passing is a tremendous loss to the community and everyone that knew him. My heart goes out to Bill the entire Heckt family for this unexpected and profound loss. I hope you can take comfort in knowing how many lives that Paul has touched, he was loved and respected by many people. He will be missed.

Dear Mel, Dorothy and family, John and I are deeply saddened to hear of Paul's death. We so enjoyed our time with Paul in the Solomon Islands. I was SO sad to hear this news. I had the privilege of meeting Paul at the 2010 and 2011 U.S. Marine Raider reunions and really enjoyed his company. The care he took with his dad was obvious and he was just a wonderful person to be around. I feel blessed to have met him.

The Heckt family is in our prayers.....may the Lord's comfort be on them as they walk through this tough time of sudden loss.

On behalf of the U.S. Marine Raider Foundation, I want to share our deep sense of loss with the untimely passing of Board of Directors member Paul Heckt. He made a tremendous contribution to so many aspects of the US Marine Raider Association & Foundation. I am so grateful that I and six other Raider Association members were able to accompany him to the Solomon Islands visiting Guadalcanal and Tulagi just a few months ago. He was inspirational in his efforts to expand our Vouza scholarship educational program to include additional schools, grade levels, and possible construction of six new classrooms. We wish his family the very best during these difficult times—know that his efforts have made this world a better place. Chuck Meacham, President U.S. Marine Raider Foundation.

I knew Paul at Gustavus. We connected first, because I knew his father from Arc. It appears that our connections continued even without contact as we both became advocates for people with disabilities.

I also remember dancing with Paul at our 10th reunion. I didn't know how to dance, but it didn't matter. Paul knew how to lead - especially when it came to having fun.

WOW! A man with spirit for advocacy and a zeal for life. Both of which he shared freely with others.

Feel blessed to have known him.

The affection and regard in which Paul was held travelled well across the international border into Canada. Paul's friends in Thunder Bay's hockey playing legal community are deeply saddened by his passing. His articles, as the self appointed scribe of The International Barristers' Cup, are legendary. If you participated in the Cup, I defy you to read his stories without laughing out loud. All of us who have played with Paul over the past 22 years of the event are united in our wish to see that he is remembered in our future gatherings.
There will be many stories told and toasts made in his honour when we next meet in February. We will miss him.

I was one of Hecktor's old goalies then a skater in Monday night hockey and the Old Goat's league. What a great guy. I still treasure the Hecktor Hockey chair that I was presented for my helping out in the nets and handing in broken goalie sticks. Best of all when the moved by my parents, he always stopped by to see how everyone was doing. From my family to yours, our deepest sympathy. Clear a loose one from out in front Hecktor! Dear Family and Friends of Paul Heckt -- I was a frat brother and classmate of Paul's. I even played a little hockey with him.

Paul was an imminently positive person who studied hard, was loyal, smart, a good athlete, and a friend to many. A few years back Hecktor wrote me specifically inviting me to a reunion at GAC. But alas I did not attend. Had I gone I would have certainly sought Hecktor out and shared some stories and likely a beer or two with him.

Hearing about the loss of Hecktor is jarring and sad. God bless him and his family.

December 21, 2011

I am the captain of the Ramsey County Bar Association hockey team and I had known Paul since we first started the International Barristers' Hockey Cup tournament more than 20 years ago. Our deepest condolences to Paul's family. Paul meant so very much to all of us in the States and Canada who had the pleasure of knowing him and playing hockey with him. He was always so kind and considerate. He is best known for documenting the history of our tournament (which has a lot more to do with people than the game we played). His humor and wit came through clearly to all of us who read his articles in Let's Play Hockey and other publications. We always looked forward to spending time with Paul at each year's tournament and when it was all over, we could not wait to read his articles. Without Paul's articles, much of our history would have been lost. Paul's memory will never be lost with the so many people who were so honored to know him. He will be forever honored and remembered by all of us hockey-playing lawyers and judges and we will be creating a special award to be given each year in his name.

I am a "68 Gustie but remember Paul from his visits to Marquette Bank. What a terrific guy. Haven't seen him in 34 years, but he was truly a memorable person I would not forget.

December 21, 2011

I met Hecktor at Gustavus but really got to know him on a trip to the BWCA in 1975 with Ole and Crash Krave. Paul was always prepared for everything - except for the challenge of Wheelbarrow Falls; and having a bear in camp while he was in the lake for his morning dip - his pots and pans noisemakers nestled in his tent!!!

Paul and I reconnected about 15 years ago when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton. The two of us exchanged e-mails over the years and anything pertaining to the Marine Corps was sure to find my inbox. Last year, after I had retired from the Marines but had started a new career at the Department of Justice, Paul came out to D.C. for a conference on disability law. We got together and spent a few enjoyable hours walking around the Mall, reminiscing about Gustavus Adolphus, and talking about our lives. He was a good friend, loved his family and his country, and had a passion for his work. He will be missed.

When it came to the Barrister's Cup Tournament, Paul never let the facts get in the way of a good story. He wove commentary about the lawyers, judges and sometimes ringers into his Let's Play Hockey articles with good humor and made the players in the tournament more important than the actual hockey scores. Paul went out of his way to bring me a couple of his articles in which my name appeared, laminated and highlighted, and which I still keep in my office 15 years later. He was a friend to the legal community and everyone that knew him. We will miss him.

We were all stunned at hockey Monday night to learn of Paul's passing. He was a fun guy to be around and we all looked forward to him presenting one of the team members with a hockey puck commemorating some memorable action from the week before. From all the guys in the Monday group, we express our sincere condolences to the family. He will be missed.

I got to know Paul at Gustavus and he loved college life as he loved life in general. He was very instrumental in keeping a network of everyone who new him. It helped us all keep life long friendships from that time. My condolences to his family.

I knew Paul through the Barristers Cup hockey tournament. When he wasn't playing he would roam the locker rooms with a Dictaphone interviewing players and trying to instigate rivalries. Then he would take his recording and write an article that made it sound like we were real hockey players and not just lawyers with skates. He will be missed at our games.

Hecktor was always a great guy. I still treasure the picture he secretly took of my Johnnie sons fully attired in Gustie Hockey gear. He was just fun to be around and I miss him already.

Paul helped my folks with so many legalities/putting affairs in order, etc. If it wasn't for his great, good help, I would even now, many years after their passing, be flailing about in despair over all the issues. Paul crossed all the T's and dotted all the I's for us. We had a good time doing it too!
Sincere condolences.

I am among Paul's many friends and acquaintances from his numerous hockey groups who mourn his death. He was a tireless, colorful and inclusive organizer of many hockey events. He will be missed and long remembered as a man who made the world a better place.

Paul is a good man who will be missed by many friends and family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to put on "gags" for a good laugh. He was a good hockey player too but a better friend and hockey historian for the Hennepin County Bar Association team which he aptly named the Bar Brawlers. We will miss him but we recall with a smile, his wit and the twinkle in his eye as he imagined his next gag. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this difficult time. May God comfort you daily with your memories of Paul.

As one of many who played hockey with "Hecktor" over the years, I'll remember him as a hard-nosed competitor on the ice, but as amiable as can be off of it. He left us far, far too soon.
My condolences to Paul's family.
