Philip GAUNT Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Apr. 27, 2013.
GAUNT, Philip Anthony
February 16, 1927 - April 25, 2013
It is with great sadness the family of Philip Anthony Gaunt announces his passing on April 25, 2013 in Stony Plain, AB at the age of 86 years.
Philip leaves to mourn his loving wife Betty, children Ian (Sandie) Chris, Jennifer (Mark), and Judi; grandchildren Kelly, Sean, Jill and Emily Higgins, Beau Armstrong, Luke and Melissa Gaunt and their mom Lorna; brother David and sister Chris Foster. He was predeceased by sister Carol Belsheim.
Born in Moyerton, AB, Phil spent his childhood in Paradise Valley, AB and moved to Edmonton in 1941. After finishing High School, he spent a year teaching in Northern Alberta, he spent another year at CN Rail and in 1946 started working for Canadian Pacific Airlines in various capacities. This job took him from Fairbanks to Regina wetting his appetite for travel. He took a leave from CPA to join the RCAF where he obtained his pilot's license. Phil married Betty Gibson in 1954. Ian and Christopher joined the family and Phil returned to CPA. In 1958, Phil and Betty bought a quarter section of land North of Stony Plain where they built a home and settled down. In 1962 Jennifer joined the family and Phil left CPA for a new Airline, Wardair. Judi completed the family in 1967. Phil flew many international routes for the next 23 years. In 1987 Phil retired from Wardair to enjoy his grandchildren and gardening.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Spruce Grove Alliance Church, 800 Century Road, Spruce Grove with Pastor Gary McKellar officiating.

To Mrs Gaunt and family. I wish to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I have fond memories of flying many times with Mr Gaunt and my Dad Roy. Life in the Cockpit of the 747 was a grand time. A great Captain, excellent pilot and a fine Gentleman who will be missed but always remembered.

Sending my condolences to the Gaunt family. Phil was on the 747, so I never flew with him. I was a Flight Engineer with Wardair Ken B.

Dear Betty and family,
We had the privilege of meeting Phil and Betty when they were neighbours of my parents, Pat and Ed. We enjoyed Phil's storytelling and his wonderful sense of humour. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Betty & family...we were so sorry to read of Phil's passing. He was always such a gentleman. We have a wonderful memory of him when we took our boys to Hawaii years ago. We met for supper with him and Peter and Ali Bakker. Funny how were all there at the same time. And then to our surprise, Phil was our pilot on the way home. Phil let the boys go up to the cockpit. Whenever we saw him at Beulah the last few years, he never seemed to have aged. He was always happy and cheerful. God bless all of you.
